17 Black Owned Beauty Brands To Support

The history books always mention Estee Lauder, Charles Revlon, and Helena Rubenstein when they talk about icons in the realm of beauty and cosmetics. But those same people don’t know the first self-made millionaire in America was a Black woman named Madame C.J. Walker. Walker created hair products for Black hair back in the early 1900s.

Fast forward to today. Walk into any major retail chain’s cosmetic section and most Black women will find it hard to find quality products designed for them. It might be due to the lack of marketing money available to these smaller (by comparison) Black owned cosmetic companies, that don’t allow them the power to compete for shelf space but we can help change that! Here are 17 Black Owned Beauty Brands You Need To Know. Give them a try and support.

KA’OIR Cosmetics

Keyshia Ka’oir and her brands have been featured in fashion, beauty, music media outlets worldwide… including MTV, BET, VH1, BRAVO, Billboard, The FADER, Essense, New York Fashion Week, GLAMOUR, CBS, IN STYLE and more.

Originally a Miami-based celebrity stylist the Jamaican beauty, KEYSHIA KA’OIR got her modeling start as “Lisa”, the jealous ex-wife in the Timbaland and Drake music video, “Say Something”. Shortly after in 2010, the budding superstar put together a whirlwind promotional push securing countless music video features, national magazine covers and launching the vibrant makeup brand, KA’OIR COSMETICS.

IMAN Cosmetics

Iman, the former super model, is the founder and CEO of IMAN Cosmetics, a beauty brand that created a cosmetics and skincare collection designed for all Women with Skin of Color™.

In September of 2019, Black Opal shared that it became officially Black-owned after being acquired by Desiree Rogers (CEO) and Cheryl Mayberry McKissack (president). Despite not initially being Black-owned, the company has dedicated more than 20 years to providing makeup and skin-care products specifically for people of color, especially Black women. The brand currently offers an array of complexion products, a few colorful lipsticks, and enough skin-care goodies to supplement your existing routines.

Pat McGrath Labs

The queen of American fashion, Vogue’s Anna Wintour, proclaimed her “the most influential makeup artist in the world.” Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II made her a Member of the Order of the British Empire for services to the fashion and beauty industry. It’s undeniable: Pat McGrath is the most influential and sought-after makeup artist in the world.

For more than two decades, Pat McGrath has been concepting, launching and developing luxury cosmetic brands, countless runway shows, breakthrough advertising campaigns and editorial spreads.

Coloured Raine Cosmetics

Loraine R. Dowdy, a Caribbean woman, born and raised in Brooklyn, founded Coloured Raine in 2013. She left behind a very affluent career and followed her life’s dream of beginning a cosmetic line that encouraged self-expression and embraced broad racial diversity. Her goal was to create distinct cosmetics that broke all barriers in the beauty industry. Coloured Raine’s mission has always been to spread awareness of beauty diverseness and to embrace all shades of skin tones through a unity bound by cosmetics.

curlBOX

I “went natural” more than 15 years ago and remember driving 20 miles to buy an expensive product that I read “worked on everyone.” I tried using that product several times, several ways only to find out it didn’t work for me and it sat under my sink for years. I started curlBOX as a means to save you the drive and the money. curlBOX gives women the opportunity to try several products for the price of one!

Miss Jessie’s

Founded by sisters Miko and Titi Branch, Miss Jessie’s products took the curly hair market by storm in 2004! Armed with curly hair product development from their salon/workshop, they were able to perfect their curly hair product’s performance. Known for its expertise in styling curly, kinky, and wavy hair of all types and textures, Miss Jessie’s Salon became the go-to place for curly hair solutions.

TPH by Taraji products deliver nourishment, protection, and deep cleansing solutions for every hair style, texture, and type. We’ve got you covered!

The Lip Bar

In 2012, I launched The Lip Bar because everywhere I looked, the media was telling women that beauty looked a certain way. I hated it! So I started making lipstick in my kitchen because I believed beauty shouldn’t compromise health and because I was determined to change the way people thought about beauty. There is no standard! You are the standard.

B.Simone Beauty

Businesswoman and YouTube personality B.Simone launched her namesake brand, B.Simone Beauty, in 2019 and earned an applause-worthy $100,000 in sales in the first two months. The vegan and cruelty-free line is made up of mainly lip products, including liners, lipsticks, and glosses, as well as makeup bags and accessories. Aesthetically the products and formulas rival its luxe counterparts, yet come at fairly affordable price points. For example, lip pencils cost $12, while liquid lipsticks are $16.

LaChae Cosmetics

LaChae cosmetics entered the beauty industry over two and half decades ago, dedicated to providing quality cosmetic solutions for women of color, designed by women of color. The company has experienced tremendous growth over the last 24 years through its recognition as a regional pioneer for cosmetics that enhance a woman’s natural beauty and by enriching the client experience through education and product knowledge. LaChae is currently at the forefront of the beauty industry, operating the only retail ‘face focused’ salons in Northeast Ohio and business units in Legos, West Africa offering cosmetic and esthetic services by licensed industry professionals.

Pattern Beauty

Celebrity hair icon Tracee Ellis Ross has her own hair-care line — a long-time dream of hers — called Pattern Beauty for people with curls ranging from 3B to 4C textures. PATTERN focuses on hair health & encourages each hair texture to take up as much space as it desires. Don’t feel the need to “tame”, “control” or “stifle” your curls & coils. Let them free.

Mixed Chicks

For years, multi-cultural people with hard to manage hair traveled from store to store, trying to blend products in a hopeless attempt to tame their locks. Wendi LEVY (left) and Kim ETHEREDGE (right), two “mixed chicks”, created a product line because they needed it. Then, something happened…friends and family started encouraging them to package it, and soon they had a full blown business running out of the garage. After a little door to door hustling, a few celebrity endorsements, and a ton of online customer support, MIXED CHICKS is bringing their products to the world.

Mielle Organics

Since inception, Mielle Organics’ products have taken the hair care market by storm. After mere months, Mielle Organics was widely recognized for its results-driven products and excellent customer service.
