Founder: Melissa Butler
Melissa Butler and Rosco Spears pitched their product on the hit show Shark Tank. Even though they did not get a deal, their company, The Lip Bar is doing just fine. The two women have created a line of luxury, bright-colored lipsticks made from natural ingredients. By the time they had appeared on the show, their company had already earned $107,000 in sales in two years. Since their appearance on the show, Ms. Butler and Ms. Spears have held fast to The Lip Bar’s message of empowering women.
Ms. Butler told Ebony magazine that the harsh criticism they received on the show in February of 2015 was largely a product of reality television. Even though they did not receive funding and one of the host, Kevin O’Leary, calling them “cockroaches,” they said they still valued the experience.
