According to the Pensacola, FL News, a 9-year-old girl was killed after her 325-pound 64-year-old cousin sat on her as a form of punishment for misbehaving. Paramedics found the victim, Dericka Lindsay, unresponsive and rushed her to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Veronica Green Posey is currently facing charges of homicide and cruelty toward a child after the incident.
According to the arrest report Posey told law enforcement that she sat on Dericka to punish her “for being out of control.” During the the “punishment,” the child told Posey and other adults present that she couldn’t breathe. When Posey finally got off the child, they found that she was unresponsive and called 911.
The Dericka’s parents, Grace Joan Smith, 69, and James Edmond Smith, 62, were present during the incident and are also facing charges of child neglect for failing to stop or report the abuse.
Grace Smith told investigators that Posey struck Dericka with a ruler and a metal pipe causing Dericka to run into an armchair. Posey then sat on the small child in the armchair for about 10 minutes before Dericka complained that she couldn’t breathe. Still, Posey remained seated for another two minutes before finally getting up.
The Smiths and Posey were all booked in Escambia County Jail. Posey’s bond was set at $125,000 and she was released. Grace Smith’s bond was set at $75,000 and James Smith’s bond was set at $50,000, and as of Monday afternoon, both Smiths were still in jail.
