The survivor of a shooting that killed four of her family members says it was due to an argument over a stimulus check.
Malik Halfacre, 25, is the man suspected of fatally shooting four people in an Indianapolis home on Saturday night.
According to family members, the argument began a day before the shooting when Halfacre told Jeanettrius Moore, the mother of his child, that he wanted half of her $1,400 stimulus check.
“He wanted some of Jeanettrius’ tax money, stimulus money,” cousin Wendy Johnson told WXIN. “She said, No, you don’t deserve any of this. I work. I take care of our child. You don’t do anything.”
Moore offered Halfacre $450, telling him “take it or leave it,” Johnson said.
Johnson said Moore told her that Halfacre walked up to her on Saturday evening when she was outside looking after her car.
“She said he gave her an evil look and walked off,” said Johnson. “He came back.”
Johnson said Halfacre came back to the house asking, ‘Where’s the money?’
An argument ensued, leading to Halfacre allegedly shooting multiple people in the home.
“He shot Daquan first. He shot Anthony. He turned around, and he shot my Auntie Tomeeka. My Auntie Tomeeka said, ‘Malik!’ and he shot her again. He came back and shot Daquan for the second time and somewhere between little baby Eve got hit somewhere and she was screaming, she was screaming.”
Moore was shot in the upper back but managed to escape and run to a neighbor’s home for help.
Officers responded to reports of a shooting just after 9:35 p.m. to find Moore wounded at the neighbor’s home. She directed them to her home and that’s where they discovered the bodies of 7-year-old Eve Moore, 23-year-old Daquan Moore, 35-year-old Anthony Johnson and 44-year-old Tomeeka Brown.
According to police, Halfacre fled the scene with his 6-month-old daughter, Malia Halfacre, triggering an Amber Alert. The girl was later found unharmed early Sunday, WISH reported.
Halfacre was arrested the same day after an hours-long standoff at a residence on the 6200 block of Eastridge Drive.
Jail records show that Halfacre has been charged with murder, attempted murder, and robbery.
The family has set up a GoFundMe to raise money to help pay for the funerals of the victims.
