The sale of the painting sets a record for the highest amount ever paid for a work of art by an American artist or any Black artist.

The piece is considered to be one of Basquiat’s best works of his short life. He died at the age of 27 from a drug overdose while he was trying to fight the scourge of drug addiction for years.

The painting depicts a face in the shape of a skull. ‘Untitled’ is now in the history books as the 6th most expensive piece of artwork ever sold at auction.

Yusaku Maezawa plans to display the painting in his museum in Chiba, Japan.
