Chicago Police Department’s ‘Operation FaceBOOKED’ Undercover Sting Leads To 53 Arrests

Chicago Police Interim Superintendent Charlie Beck held a press conference on Tuesday to announce the result of an undercover sting called ‘Operation FaceBooked.’

According to officials Operation FaceBOOKED led to the arrests of 53 people for selling illegal guns and drugs to undercover cops who were using fake Facebook accounts.

First Deputy Superintendent Anthony Riccio explained that Organized Crime detectives have been going undercover digitally by posing as criminals looking to purchase illegal guns and drugs sold on private or invisible Facebook groups.

The undercover officers would then complete the purchase in person and make an arrest.

CPD also mentioned that they are encountering issues with Facebook when it comes to closing down these private groups. Saying the social media giant is harboring criminals because they aren’t doing enough to get rid of these groups. Officers also stated that Facebook has been making their operations by shutting down undercover detectives fake accounts.
