Cop Who Killed 15-Year-Old Jordan Edwards Sentenced To 15 Years

A Texas jury sentenced a former police officer to 15 years in prison Wednesday night for the shooting death of an unarmed African-American teen in a Dallas suburb.

The jury deliberated for 12 hours before deciding the fate of former Balch Springs officer Roy Oliver. In addition to the prison term, it imposed a fine of $10,000.

Oliver was convicted of murder Tuesday by the same jury for the killing of high school freshman Jordan Edwards, 15. He fired into a car full of teens on April 29 last year, saying he believed it was moving aggressively toward his partner.

Dallas County District Attorney Faith Johnson described Oliver as a “killer in blue” who violated his oath to protect citizens. Prosecutors sought a sentence of at least 60 years while the defense argued for 20 years or less.

Johnson said she wished Oliver’s sentence was much longer, but she respected the jury’s decision and realizes a guilty verdict for an officer is rare in police shootings.

Charmaine Edwards said she’d have preferred a sentence of 25 to 30 years for her son’s killer.

“He actually can see life again after 15 years,” she said. “And that’s not enough because Jordan can’t see life again.”

That young boy had perhaps SEVENTY more years to live. That trigger happy cretin stole those 70 years and that’s how
long he should serve.

Twyon September 2, 2019 at 9:24 pm

He will be out in three years.

Dan May 23, 2019 at 5:26 pm

g15 years for a life and the sad thing is that the kid was 15, so he got only a year for each year that this kid lived, this is not justice , it is still a crime

KEITH July 8, 2019 at 12:36 am

Racist ass dumb Pig Cop will be out in three.

Jeff Hutchinson May 23, 2019 at 10:40 pm

You’re probably right which is why he hasn’t shown any remorse of any kind.
Just another modern day lynching. What should also be implemented is that he’s on probation for life since he intentionally took a life (murder in the 1st degree. And that he’s not getting any funds from any organization for his family as his benefits should be forfeited towards the innocent victims family.

Shakitta June 28, 2019 at 2:27 pm

This is great. So often these rogue cops go unpunished, and this is a huge win for black ppl all over the U.S. who are unfairly targeted and killed just for being black. Thank god for that jury. May the rest of America follow in their lead.

chris dungie July 2, 2019 at 1:58 am

For what reason do they think murder of a 15 year old is 15 years SERIOUSLY people, in this society we have to be strong, voice your opinion all over social media , voice it , violence isnt the way to get anywhere VOICE YOUR FEELINGS used what we have a VOICE , it’s so sad and I dont understand why they think we have no feelings we dont deserve respect WHY

Leroy Pena May 25, 2019 at 10:14 am

He is appealing that verdict. Will likely serve less than 5 years.😠

Surina July 2, 2019 at 5:36 pm

That pig will not serve 7 yrs of that time. If was the mother of that child. I would sue him and make his wife and family suffer too, she knows hes a piece of shyt. No telling how many more Black youth lost their life too him.

Ken May 25, 2019 at 1:57 pm

Any sentence 15 years are less qualifies for immediate appeal. “The devil and his games.”

Linda Martin May 25, 2019 at 4:49 pm

This is an injustice to to society as a whole, let alone it being another black life taken way too soon. I’m sick of hearing about this kind of behavior from a cop who takes an oath to protect and serve the people.

She’s right s guilty sentence on a hero in blue is rare. Our hero will be out in s couple years. Justice was served.

Petedenney May 27, 2019 at 1:14 am

To the racist cops that call him a hero I hope you all die a slow and pain full death

Eve June 28, 2019 at 1:45 am

Really hero’s that take the life of innocent black lives some people will never understand what a black mother has to go through. Constantly worrying about our sons, the pain of seeing your child life end senselessly this is no different from modern day slavery and post slavery lynchings. You could feel that mother’s pain listening and looking at her.

Marc July 7, 2019 at 9:11 am

I’m sorry but black mothers don’t own the rights to worrying for their kids. 2 things, if the incident was one racist cop shooting a kid then year i believe he should be found guilty. Yet if he really believe the car was trying to run over his partner then firing into the car was the right thing to do. Unfortunately if this wasn’t racist fueled that is hoe it will be viewed no matter what. If it was a white kid cop may of been found guilty anyways then the public would of forgotten about it. Media would have no story and communities could not call racism. That single word has powerful meaning, if used incorrectly can destroy lives. We like to use jt today for everything because its easier than trying to figure out what the truth really is.

Kimberly July 9, 2019 at 1:10 pm

This is arguably the lamest comment I have ever read. You want to post regarding how people should be a careful about using the word “racism” because it destroys lives yet, a cop was found guilty of murdering an unarmed teen and he only got 15 years for a sentence of murder. You think a Black person would obtain such a low sentence for taking the life of a White person? Sigh, you are stupid. Please don’t even advise anyone of what they should say because you don’t even think before opening your mouth.

Kj September 15, 2019 at 10:39 pm

Hi dumb ass! The truth is, he illegally killed an unarmed person. There! Is that enough! You must be white…

Shakitta June 28, 2019 at 2:31 pm

That racist cop called him a hero. Hes a coward, just like u, not a hero. I hope the next time he shoots or kills someone, it’s someone u love. Let’s see u call him a hero then.

Panther July 1, 2019 at 9:15 pm

Micah Johnson is a TRUE hero, he killed 5 cops in Dallas because he had enough of racist white cops getting away with killing and brutalizing black peopl.

James H Wallace May 26, 2019 at 10:41 am

Not enough time. He probably won’t stay even close to that time.. Hope they are waiting for him behind those walls. Karma will get him or his Family.

Anna Mae Bullock May 27, 2019 at 7:41 am

He won’t live to see 2 years in prison! Trust me.. They are waiting for his A..He’s going down, so the other racist cops who call him a hero.. Betta say goodbye to your hero before he goes to jail…

Kitty June 30, 2019 at 11:24 am

If we’re lucky they’ll kill his ass in prison before he even gets his appeal.

Suluhu July 5, 2019 at 2:43 am

Cops dont go to population, they do time in luxury..

Clark May 28, 2019 at 11:32 am

I hope they get his ass in the pin.. damn shame

Frer Levanjil May 31, 2019 at 3:26 am

Wow so if the victim was 15 months old, the killer would of gotten 15months lock up? I’m just confused 😕

alberta reid July 4, 2019 at 2:24 pm

He probably won’t even be placed in with regular inmates. What’s 15 years? Drug dealers get more time than that.

Sorry for his mother’s lost! Take him to civil court lady and take what you can! Please! It won’t bring your son back to you but at least you have put some hurt on the other side. Drain him !

Bea June 27, 2019 at 11:18 pm

He took a life, he should had gotten life.

Stephen white June 30, 2019 at 8:40 am

I can only think of 1 type of punishment for a POS like that if he take my sons life

Well, you can be sure someone will be waiting to greet him in prison.

Michael July 3, 2019 at 11:35 am

This is a start … Need now to go after his go fund me page or any money he make after murdering this kid

Stanley July 7, 2019 at 9:36 am

He should’ve gotten life for taking a life he does not deserve to see the light of day for the rest of his life.these pink ass cops think they have the authority over you and they don’t,they aren’t there to go protect the citizens they are only to protect the establishment they can give a shot about the peop people they are there to protect the codes.

Mike White July 9, 2019 at 12:59 pm

Any time a cop get 15 yrs or less automatic appeal and he may serve 2 years or less maybe probation

Belinda Hill August 18, 2019 at 9:18 am

POLICE officers are starting to kill themselves now and I feel that it is the ones that want to do right and respect the community that they serve bit because of the pressure from the top to treat us like animals they see no other way out.

sidney springs August 20, 2019 at 2:15 pm

Your video doesn’t work and the killer cop should of gotten atleast 40 years.White’s always kick a person of color down, they are the most rotten people on this planet.

Pauline August 23, 2019 at 5:14 pm

This is why, we, black people, people of color, should come together and first stop killing our own and give love and understanding to one another.

Jdub September 6, 2019 at 2:57 pm

15 years and he’ll be paroled after 8….you notice he didn’t bat one eye at the sentence. This is white supremacy in action.

Nunya Damnbusiness September 7, 2019 at 9:07 am

@Cop29 that coward in blue deserves to do life in jail not 15 years for killing a child. 15 is a slap on the wrist and an insult to young Jordan. Police take an oath to preserve life not end it for shits and giggles. You sir are a coward and a racists

Trisha Geer September 8, 2019 at 7:40 pm

Not enough time,
He took the life of a child ,
Life for life he should be in for good. My prayers 🙏 are with Jordans family 🙏💔

*REPENTANCE NOW* November 12, 2019 at 7:01 pm

Any Human Being Who Swears To Love Their Own, Should Try Picturing Your Child Murdered And Sprawled Out In The Streets. Whether By A Cop With A Blue Suit And A Badge, Or By Some Criminal In The Street, Murder Should Be Called What It Is. Regardless, Taking Someone’s Life When They Are No Threat To You Is Murder. What Damage Can A Person Do While In Handcuffs? That’s Only One Example Of The Countless, Senseless Murders That Has Taken Place. On The Other Hand A White Citizen Can Get Out Of Their Vehicle With Gun In Hand And He’s Pleaded With To Drop His Weapon. You Guys Had Better Remember That The Innocent Blood That You Shed, “WILL” Surely Have To Be Answered For One Day. You Will See It Again, And You Will Know, That Striving To Fit In With The Statis Quo Was Not Worth What You Will One Day, Surely Have To Face! It’s The Evil Hearted People Who Seem To Think That This Is Ok That I Feel Sorry For. The Devil Has A Grip On Your Very Hateful, Evil Souls. If You Murder Once, You’ll Do It Again, And Don’t Ever Think That This Evil Won’t Show Up At Your Front Door One Day! May God Give You Wicked Souls An Urgency In Your Spirits To Repent. The Day Will Come That You Will For Sure, Wish You Had.

Doug Sword November 13, 2019 at 10:41 am

I understand the anger many of you feel. I would feel the same way if it were my son. I am a 23 year veteran of Dallas PD. I have observed this kind of injustice over the years where a suspect did not get the justice they clearly deserved. In this case, the facts didn’t fit a 1st degree murder. There were elements to prove 1st degree murder. I hope he spends every day of his 15 year sentence.

Someone mentioned that when someone kills a cop, the book gets thrown at them. The reason is that the penal code defines the murder of a police officer as a capital crime.

Doug Sword November 13, 2019 at 11:03 am

I didn’t edit my post very well. I meant to say that I am white 23 years veteran of DPD. It’s true that the criminal justice system. Once, early in my career, my partner and I arrested two young men for aggravated assault on a police officer. Let me say that they were guilty. My partner and I both suffered some injuries. A mob came after us when were talking to them. We later discovered that it was a setup.

I say all this to say that these young men deserves a fair trial. They didn’t get one. In a fair trial, they would have been found guilty (they were), but the deck was stacked against them. The judge, who is long since dead, was a racist and had not the least bit of objectivity. That experience made me see that I had a duty to what I could to see that all people got treated fairly by the system. It’s still a long way off, but I believe it’s gotten better.
