With the election of Donald Trump just over a week ago, the incidents of hate crimes have drastically increased according to the Southern Poverty Law Center. Since it became official early on the morning of November 9th that Trump will become the 45th President of the US, over 315 hate crimes have been reported to the SPLC. The group tracks incidents of reported hate crimes throughout the country and they said this number of incidents in a one-week period is a “truly a frightening number.” The SPLC usually see this number of reported hate crimes in a five to six month period.
The incidents have been targeted towards various groups such as: women, the LGBTQ community, immigrants, the Muslim community, and the largest number of incidents have been against the Black community. According to experts who track hate crimes, these acts of white supremacist violence will equal or surpass the number of violent acts that occurred after the September 11, 2001 attacks. What’s even more troubling is the fact that a high number of these race-based attacks are occurring in elementary, middle, and high schools throughout America. A bathroom in an elementary school in Silver Spring, Maryland had “KILL KILL KILL BLACKS” scrawled across the wall. At Maple Grove Senior High School in Minnesota, bathrooms there had “Fuck niggers” and “#GoBackToAfrica” scribbled across the walls.
Trump supporters are becoming even more embolden as evidenced by an incident near Anaheim, CA, where a person reported that “white males in a black Ford truck were calling a Black family in the vehicle next to them niggers and yelling that it was Trump’s country now. The truck sped off before I could get license [plate] info,” according to the person who witnessed the incident.
It appears that America is squarely back to a racial point that people had assumed the country had moved pass and become a more inclusive place. But these acts of hate-filled intimidation is proving that Blacks and other minority groups have to be vigilant against acts of terror committed by white supremacist ideology.
