The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office in Florida says it is investigating a video that shows one of their School Resource Officers slamming a high school student to the ground and knocking her unconscious.
The incident happened Tuesday afternoon at Liberty High School in Kissimmee, Florida. According to police, the officer was trying to stop a fight that had started between the students in the hallway when he initiated the take down.
The 10 second long video was uploaded to social media by Demeatre Bodie, the mother of a student who attends the school.
“If we were to do something like that to our kids, we would be in jail,” Bodie said in an interview with WFTV.
The video shows the unnamed School Resource officer slamming the female student to the ground. As she lands her head can be seen and heard smacking against the ground. She seems to immediately lose consciousness from the blow. The officer then straddles the student, pulls her limp arms behind her back and puts her in handcuffs. Students can be heard screaming at the officer, saying he knocked her out.
A spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office released a statement saying, “We are collecting video, witness statements and relevant information related to the incident. We know that the School Resource Officer was in the process of trying to stop the student from fighting another student in the hallway when the deputy took her into custody. Once we receive more information related to the incident, we will provide an updated press release.”
The Sheriff’s office has not released the name of the officer involved in this incident or any information about the student or how she is doing after the blow to her head.
