Ice Cube has been getting a lot of backlash on social media after senior Trump advisor Katrina Pierson posted a tweet thanking him for his “willingness to step up and work with President Trump.”
“Leaders gonna lead, haters gonna hate. Thank you for leading!” Pierson tweeted at Ice Cube Tuesday.
Response to the tweet came quickly and Ice Cube was criticized for appearing to be supportive of the Trump administration.
A rep for Ice Cube responded to the backlash and tried to clarify the rapper’s intent. According to the rep, Ice Cube offered to meet with both the Trump and Biden campaigns in recent weeks to discuss an “agenda for Black Americans” and support for his Contract With Black America (CWBA), which “strikes at the heart of racism and presents a blueprint to achieve racial economic justice.”
Ice Cube’s rep said both parties responded to his offer to meet, however, Biden’s campaign said they would touch base after Election Day, while Trump’s administration contacted Ice Cube and added some of the CWBA’s ideas to the White House’s “Platinum Plan.”
Trump’s “Platinum Plan” promises to “increase access to capital in black communities by almost $500 billion” by creating 500,000 black-owned businesses and 3 million new jobs for the black community, as well as “access to better education and job training.” The Platinum Plan also pledges to strengthen Trump’s immigration and policing policies in order to protect jobs and communities.
Ice Cube explained further in a follow-up tweet, “Facts: I put out the CWBA. Both parties contacted me. Dems said we’ll address the CWBA after the election. Trump campaign made some adjustments to their plan after talking to us about the CWBA.”
He also posted a video on his Instagram page titled “DON’T KILL THE MESSENGER”, where he spoke about his political opinions and the need for Black people to make politicians “do what we need them to do.”
“Everybody’s been mad at me because I haven’t been on the gravy train of these candidates, especially Joe Biden and Harris. I don’t trust none of them. No president has done right by us,” Cube said.
