An L.A. Fitness location in Secaucus, NJ has fired the club’s manager and two other employees over the harassment of a Black gym member and his guest. While the gym member wasn’t identified by name, his guest was identified as Tshyrad Oates.
Oates said he was using a four-day guest pass which was given to him by the gym member, who was a club member for over 8 years. After checking into the gym’s front desk and began working out, Oates said they were once again asked for identification.
The incident has gone viral after being shared by Oates on Facebook. In the video, Oates said the club manager called the Secaucus police on him and his friend while they were working out.
Oates’ friend can be heard in one of four videos that were shared saying, “I’m the only person in the gym who has to scan in again… (we) are the only two black people in the gym. I’ve been having problems with this staff for months — over nothing.”
With his initial post on Facebook, Oates said his friend “felt racially profiled and embarrassed by the harassment of this L.A. Fitness employee in front of other members at the gym.”
A salesperson reached at the Secaucus location confirmed that the manager and two female employees were fired by L.A. Fitness but the company itself has refused to confirm the employees’ terminations.
