Louisiana Judge Refers to Black Woman as “Fat Nigger”

According to a post on Facebook, Kaneitra Johnson says a judge told a fellow bar patron, “You should have made her get her fat nigger ass up.”

The statement was allegedly made by Judge Mike Erwin, who is the most senior jurist in Louisiana’s 19th Judicial District.

The incident reportedly took place at Sammy’s Grill in Baton Rouge. Johnson said she was at the restaurant to have dinner with a group of people and they had about a two-hour wait for a table. They decided to get drinks at the bar while waiting for their table. At the bar, she struck up a conversation with a man who was a Lyft driver.

The driver left his seat and went to the bathroom. Johnson sat in the man’s chair while he was away and upon his return they decided to share the chair together.

The man told Johnson he had no problem with sharing the seat because he would be leaving shortly anyway. In an interview with the Rouge Collection magazine, Johnson said, “All of a sudden I hear this older man behind me tell the [Lyft driver], ‘You never give up your seat for a nigger. You should have made her get her fat nigger ass up.”

According to Johnson, the Lyft driver responded to the judge’s hateful barrage by stating, “Well, this is my seat while I’m sitting in the seat. When I’m not in the seat it should be anyone’s seat.”

As the argument escalated, the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s department was called to the restaurant. The police interviewed witnesses and the individuals involved in the argument. The police chose to make no arrests and it was after the fact that Johnson realized the belligerent man was a sitting Louisiana judge.

In her FB post, Johnson said, “I’ve heard stories about people spewing out hatred but never been the person being spewed upon… I felt so low, embarrassed, unwanted, out of place… all in a place I’ve visited many times before.”

While initially doing nothing about the incident, the management at Sammy’s Grill has since stated that, “We do not want Judge Erwin’s business anymore.” According to the restaurant’s owner, Sammy Nagem, “we are going to be refusing his business.”

So far, the judge has made no comments in regards to the incident and the accusations of racial harassment leveled against him.

What is there to say, some people have privilege, others don’t….is that racism and shouldn’t all citizens be afforded privilege as a naturalized citizen?
Stop focusing on race and call it what it truly is….remember the original Constitution was written for the 21 yo white male….’privilege’ had a baby and called it ‘racism’….WAKE UP!!!!!

the dead have some personal issues at obviously it spewed forth in public. Tragically the judge is either a very lonely old man or he wished that things are different that they go back to the old way of doing things and retain the power of the Confederacy.

As a practicing writer, I have always followed an intuitive logic it
felt natural to concentrate on the topic -> come up with ideas/answers -> put it on paper.
However, nothing can save me when I was writing about thermodynamics, as an instance, that, as you can imagine, isn’t my primary
field of experience. Anyhow, I took some Terrific
tips from your writing style, thanks to that:slightly_smiling_face:
