An Oregon man was arrested Friday night after police say he spewed anti-Islamic slurs and threatened a 68-year-old convenience store employee.
Brian Christopher Miller, 43, can be seen in a video recorded by the store clerk throwing items, pushing display cases off the shelf, damaging the cash register, throwing food and threatening the clerk. At one point during his tirade, Miller threatens to shooting the clerk.
“I’ll f—ing shoot you in the back.”
Portland Police responded to the Chevron gas station convenience store at 7:44 p.m. on Friday after receiving a 911 call from the store employee reporting a man had threatened to kill him and was destroying the store.
Police arrested Miller just outside the convenience store and charged with suspicion of first-degree criminal mischief and third-degree robbery, both felonies.
“During the booking process, he was uncooperative, intoxicated and making threatening, self-harm statements. After completing the booking process, he was provided a protective smock and placed in a cell under watch,” Multnomah County Sheriff’s Communications Director Chris Liedle said.
According to jail records, he was booked into jail on Friday night and then released the next day on his own recognizance.
On Monday, prosecutors revised the charges against Miller.
Miller has now charged with a bias crime in the first degree, three counts of a bias crime in the second degree, in addition to burglary, criminal mischief, trespassing, menacing and robbery charges, Mutnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt said in a statement.
According to the victim’s son, the store worker, who is a 68-year-old man originally from Afghanistan, was not seriously injured during the encounter.
