Never Forget: America’s Forgotten Mass Lynching: When 237 Black Sharecroppers Were Murdered In Arkansas

In 1919, after the end of World War I, Black sharecroppers in Arkansas began to unionize. This attempt to form unions, triggered white vigilantism and mass killings, that left 237 Blacks dead.

Towards the end of 1918, attorney Ulysses S. Bratton of Little Rock, Arkansas listened to Black sharecroppers tell stories of theft, exploitation, and never ending debt. One man by the name of Carter, explained how he cultivated 90 acres of cotton and then had his landlord confiscate the crop and all of his possessions. Another Black farmer, from Ratio, Arkansas said a plantation manager would not give sharecroppers an itemized record of their crop. No one realized that within a year of meeting with Mr. Bratton, one of the worst incidents of racial violence in U.S. would take place. In a report released by the Equal Justice Initiative, white people in the Delta region of the South, started a massacre that left 237 Black people dead. Even though the one-time death toll was unusually high, it was not uncommon for whites to use racial violence to intimidate Blacks.

Mr. Bratton represented the deprived sharecroppers who became members of a new union, the Progressive Farmers and Household Union of America. The new union was founded by a Black Delta native named Robert Hill. With no prior organizing experience, all Robert Hill had going for him was ambition. Mr. Hill said “the union wants to know why it is that the laborers cannot control their just earnings which they work for,” as he asked Black sharecroppers to each persuade 25 new members to join a lodge.

The white elites of the region understood that the only way they could maintain their economic prosperity was to exploit Black sharecroppers and laborers. A well-to-do Northerner, E.M. “Mort” Allen, came to Arkansas and founded a new town called Elaine, which became a hub for the lucrative lumber industry. Mort Allen said the “Southern men can handle the negroes all right and peaceably,” but peaceable techniques were far from what was used to destroy the sharecroppers’ union. In an attempt to disrupt a union meeting, a white landowner was shot and killed. The sharecroppers braced for reprisals that were sure to come and formed self-defense forces. The local sheriff, Frank Kitchens, deputized a large white militia that was headquartered at the county courthouse. In the end, 237 Black people were killed because they wanted fair compensation for the crops they harvested.

No one was ever charged or any trials held for anyone that took part in the mass lynchings. The basis for these heinous crimes was the reassertion of white supremacy after veterans returned home from World War I. The white militias wanted to send a message that they were going to keep the Blacks in their ‘place.’ But what made 1919 unique, was the willingness and fortitude, of the Black sharecroppers and their community to engage in armed resistance against white oppression.

Not just blacks should know….all citizens should know.

Bruno Bizier May 15, 2016 at 1:47 pm

I totally agree that ALL should know about this and about as many of the horrors committed by Whites who, most of the time, would not play fair game in their business relations, anyway. I am a French Canadian white man, who grew up in a old Catholic environment. We had to free ourselves from the oppression heaped on us by the WASPs, who were in ”bisiness” with the higher levels of the Catholic clergy. We were not as badly opprressed as the African Americans, but we had our share of shit!

Cheryl Angevine August 3, 2016 at 9:07 pm

It cannot be compared in any way. I also grew up in a Catholic environment. I attended an English Catholic school in Montreal, we knew that we were in the minority in the east end of the city and at times were not treated very well by our French Canadian neighbors. The French Catholic Diocese insisted that their students receive a “classical ” education , including the study of Latin. People voted the way the priests told them to. It took a long time to catch up with the rest of the country, education wise. Blame the WASPS if you like but it was really the Catholic Church and Maurice Duplessis who held you back. He wanted to have complete control over the people of Quebec and he had it for a long time. The black people here in the US were terrorized on a daily basis, beatings and lynchings were common. They lived with the constant threat of violence. I’m sure you would admit that didn’t happen to French Canadians.

Daryl August 9, 2016 at 1:08 am

I don’t think we should be side lined with sidetracked arguments about my oppression and abuse was worse. I think you both are showing empathy for the African American. We must unite and educate others of these incidents and they will see it is exactly what is happening today. Only a different approach but the outcome is the same.

sandra scofield August 8, 2016 at 9:07 am

Are you kidding me? As a “french Canadian white man” you were “not as badly oppressed as the African americans” but that you had your “share of shit”? Are you even remotely interested in how you and your race utterly shat and continue to do so on the indigenous people of this country? Poor entitled white man!

daniel zax September 5, 2016 at 12:24 pm

french canadian were allies with the indigenous people darling. the most violent indigenous group, iroquois, got allied with the british so they could beat the french. they later on, the british killed the iroquois. it’s seems you don’t know much about our history. But who cares about who suffer more or less. We are showing and talking about empathy and support. People like you just want to blame stuff on people and victimises itself. You don’t go nowhere this way.

William Jones November 7, 2016 at 5:32 pm

You know what? There are many of us white folks that regret what our ancestors did to your ancestors. We weren’t there to stop it. Most of us really feel for the sufferings of the black people, but with YOUR attitude, good race relations are a long way off. Let me tell YOU something, darling. In the so called medieval ages the poor white people were abused by their own kind. go back and read history, and i don’t mean that revised history. Have a good day and God Bless.

Edward Naylon September 21, 2018 at 9:17 am

I can’t believe the people who compare their white hardships…if you can call it that…with the legal genocide of darker skinned people. It would be funny if it weren’t so misguided. For me, calling this country land of the free will never ring true until white racism is outlawed. When I hear home of the brave…I think of my fellow black Americans. You are brave and models for fighting for your rights. More power to you! I’m white, ashamed, but on your side forever.

Crying over spilled milk. Get over it. Get a job. Be husbands and wives to each other. Be parents to your children. Be happy. Stop anguishing over something that has nothing to do with your happiness and success in life.

Marvin September 1, 2016 at 1:46 pm

Ahhh…. ….yes get over it! You’ve already done that. But if we forget, you just might do it again!!!!!! Least that’s the lesson we are told after the second world war and the treatment of the Jews……Why should blacks be any different from the Jews? Because the acts were perpetrated by white Americans? There is nothing you can do , but remember for some, the American dream was a nightmare and independence day….was just another day.

NancyE September 3, 2016 at 3:11 pm

It is my mission in life to get all whites (which I am) to read Sundown Towns. It’s a long, difficult (because of the cruelty) read, but it will show you things you never imagined. And the reason they can’t “just get over it” is because they are still so far behind – African Americans have never been able to accumulate wealth and pass down to their children as we have, due to violence, threats of violence, running blacks out of town in the middle of the night with nothing but the clothes on their backs, later redlining, and now the war on drugs.

Yourmama September 3, 2016 at 5:17 pm

Shut your stupid ass up. If it were you and yours you would feel the same. We are husbands and wives to eachother until we’re forced to be broken by unjust violence and take your black on black crime response somewhere like up your god damn ass. All people like you want to do is try to make us forget what’s in our past… This IS our history… Just because we’re forcing you to relive it due to your guilt and delusion you want to erase it like it was a blurb in time… It fucking happened. Acknowledge it…. And do something with your voice (or your stupid ass thumbs) to say something right. Bigot ass bitch

Leonard Gresham September 3, 2016 at 8:48 pm

Are you serious, why in the hell can’t whites get over the “holocaust, 911 or other atrocities. Why can’t you understand and support a foot ballplayer’s constitutional right to protest injustice, hell, white people still can’t stand to see a black man talking to or dating a white woman something that has led to the death of many black men. Before you ask black people to “get over it” there’s a lot of shit you need to get over, until then fuck you, get over that.

Cles September 6, 2016 at 6:45 am

It’s typical of someone like you say such a thing when you learn the real truths of Our history and the horrific deeds done by white ppl. You can’t just say stop crying over spilled milk, get over it because these things are happening to Black Americans today…just in a different way and almost as blatantly as they did back then. If White learn the truths of the real history of Black Americans and the struggle from Slavery to the 60s etc, lol like you would have a different opinion about the unfair treatment of Blacks today.

PAR September 7, 2016 at 11:45 pm

Don — we should say that about the civil war too . . . to all those confederate flag wavers and lovers. Get over it, spilt milk, it was a fair fight and the south got its ass kicked. Move on. Quit dressing up like dumb confederate soldiers, playing stupid war reenactment games. Go to work. Get a freaking job, deal with your kids for crying out loud. It has nothing to do with modern happiness and while your at it, can we please take down the stupid statues of the dead and treasonous confederate generals. What a bore! Bunch of misguided dead white guys no-one cares about.

Blacks can teach a thing or two to white folks about parenting. They don’t make serial killers, mass murderers and Donald Trumps

Juanita McDonald September 23, 2016 at 11:32 pm

This is only part of the real US History white supremacy tried to erase and rewrite into what is taught in public schools as US History….get over it you and countless others like you say, yet you want others to hear your so called history in schools across the nation. How do you get over something that continues to happen in different forms every day… now instead of lynchings we have Black men women and children being murdered in the streets by police and various racists. Same game different players doesn’t add up to spilled milk, things haven’t changed and there is nothing we need to forget!

Dee Lee September 24, 2016 at 3:11 pm

In 2016- Black women are the most educated people in America. In 2016- research shows Black fathers are more supportive and attentive to their children. In 2016 -Black people do not receive the most government assistance. BTW: We would stop languishing over the past if 1400 black people were not murder this year by people in authority. So really, we tried to forget the past and it came back to hunt us. I’m sure you know the old adage.

Marj September 24, 2016 at 11:05 pm

Sir you are a fool!

Mary November 1, 2016 at 1:35 pm

It is easy for a ignorant person to tell someone to get over it, when it did not happen to you, your family, or your people . We must remember or past so we don’t repeat it.
Which is still going on today with the native Americans and the pipeline in North Dakota
White people are always telling people of color to get over it.
Of course you will say get over it, because you caused the pain and don’t care.
But every one will have to give account to God for the actions they did in there life.

David November 6, 2016 at 4:34 am

This advice you should keep to yourself. History must never be forgotten. Stop being the number 1 alcoholics, drug addicts, child molestors, then maybe you can give advice.

Juanita Jones March 23, 2017 at 4:44 pm

Get over what Don? Our history? As soon as Whites get over theirs! Chronicling a whitewashed account and putting it in textbooks and museums calling it “American, or US History 101. Showcasing historical artifacts; some theirs, others “borrowed” from cultures they victimized. Omitting the atrocities whites committed during the genocidal land grab from the Natives and the victimization of Blacks to build this country! Stop telling others to get over their history and try correcting yours to reflect the truth!

Bruno, I am a white female from Quebec who just happened to have an Anglo father and although I was bilingual, with a Franco mother, I was treated horribly by the French. (During the 60s, when there was a movement to withdraw from Canada)
I can’t even imagine what these poor black sharecroppers went through.

Yes all citizens. If we all don’t know what atrocities we be been responsible for, how can we possibly heal those wounds. Thank you from a concerned citizen.

Marcia Riquelme July 31, 2016 at 11:28 am

There is a study published by the Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism: How Early Environment can Change Your Brain, it details what our children need to flourish and the challenges faced by impoverished children. It includes the stressors faced by families in our times and which communities are hardest hit. You can find this study online. I also know for a fact that stress and hardship damage our genetic structure in ways that take years to recuperate. We need to see that atrocities and violence tear people apart in long-lasting ways that not only do we know in a ‘common sense’ way but now is being measured by modern science. We owe all people amongst us a better chance in life. Let’s work on this with all our hearts.

Shateesha Haynes August 3, 2016 at 11:14 am

Yes. We whites need to be told what has been done throughout our history. There is so much we were never taught, especially not to us in our white schools. Until we know (and acknowledge) the darkness in our national story, our attempts at healing will only be superficial.

Eileen Litchfield November 7, 2016 at 11:20 am

Yes this country needs to tell the truth of our history. There has been some very evil white men in this country. The unfortunate part is that mentality is a human condition.

A.B August 11, 2017 at 2:38 am

All citizens already know the African in the hells of North America….We are still not citizens to them nor are we human according to their doctrines which shows the type of psychology these albinoid’s still possess….Unfortunately our DNA is Supreme and we are the only Hue Mans on the planet and this they know as well as all of their so called scholars.Their LAWs and Constitution does not apply to us but it is one hell of a smoke screen all you have to do is read and step outside of the matrix…That is why they can blow your kids brains out in broad daylight and hide behind the racist police unions and nothing happens …Don’t let these people manipulate your mind we are inferior to NO other group of people FACTS!!….We suffer from post traumatic slave syndrome and never got any help or therapy of any kind coming from up under the whip of Master among those slave dungeons and chains… One of our Queens Dr. Joy Degruy gives well profound lecture on this check it out….They’ve been killing and hanging my people for along time nothing changed (YET)!! The euro community comes together raise and put up money and its all over, that is why they can kill your women and rape them and get off with the help of their wicked ass biased judicial system and nothing happens.Watch out for the broad ambiguous terms like black on black crime that confuses you as a slave black men and women, they use it alot in mainstream media as a deflection tactic in most cases…. They know exactly who we are but they also know after 400 years you still love your slave master, you have no fight and anyone can infiltrate your neighborhoods or what’s left like its a play day at the park…They know all about trials the African men and women faced through chattle slavery when we were kidnapped and bought and sold for profit, leading up to today with mental slavery among a group that worships peckerwoods and a fake white jesus within a religion that they don’t even understand….Furthermore in which ordained genocide on the African people (all 3 western religions) and all the African tribes in that pseudo bible are cursed ….The European Brit Irish/Jew needs no script nor do these beasts need to be reminded by us trust me they know who we are so the statement stands correct the melanoid African needs to know their full history given to them by someone of their own divine bloodline….We are not Christians or Hebrew Israelites people get off of the plantation and educate yourself…We continue to teach these kids this inferior brainwashing tactics of these bastardize people…Letting them educate your children and white wash their minds with these silly ass holidays which most don’t understand the history behind either…..As a spiritual people Black is a state of mind not a skin color… we are not crayons and don’t have any land called Black indigenous to a group of Blacks but we do have a vast land that it ours and if you are Black and Awoke I’m sure you know what continent that is besides the fact that we are the first people in all four corners of this universe….Yes we built America too but the dominant society here has never had love for your people and never will….The Illusion of Inclusion, Religion, and Lack of Knowledge of Self keeps us divided, miseducated and weak as fuck and whites laugh at you its not that hard to see most of them will even tell you to your face LOL ….Cultural Research is needed get out of your slave manuals and stop looking for a God or white man to open the sky and save you NAGA….Everywhere those fucking people went throughout history they’ve done nothing but steal, deceive and destroy shit you can look them up its all their minus the shit they try to cover up in their educational institutions and or universities …FACTsss…Stop looking for your oppressor to take you out of your conditions..We are dealing with White Supremacy kill the negro that wants to love everybody inside you, if not you will be exterminated and that’s what they really want…All Europeans are racist stop laying up with these Fucking Caucaziods !! Anyone who don’t like what I said well you know what to do….Some wont make it but the blueprint has been laid we are not looking for approval from other races… Superior ALFA male and I love my people but we must Wake Up!!

Sean Hellier May 15, 2016 at 8:38 am

I too had never heard of this horror. Being a white guy, I would like to suggest that we all should be taught the true history of our nation, including racial crimes committed by those of my kind.

Perhaps if we were, it would improve our relationship to our darker skinned cousins?

Joe Axton August 7, 2016 at 7:41 am

If your wanting to look into the attrocities of white man in this country, you should not only look into how blacks were attrociously treated, but also into how the native american was treated. As bad as the truths are in this article, the white man decimated many North American tribes because they were not convenient to white colonization. Thousands were murdered, entire tribes wiped from existance. Lied to, raped, murdered and only because they had the bad luck of being there first and considered to be savages because they spoke a different language and held different spiritual beliefs.

Mikey September 2, 2016 at 10:43 pm

It’s time for EVERYBODY to quit living in the past and just honestly try to get along with EVERYBODY else!!!

PAR September 7, 2016 at 11:57 pm

Mickey — the way to stop living in the past is not to ignore it but to understand, acknowledge it, teach it, be truthful and atone for past wrongs, especially incidents as horrifying as these. These mass murders are woven into the fabric of the American story. It’s uncomfortable for many of us white skinned Americans to walk down the path of truth but only the truth will set us all free. Look to South Africa — the truth and reconciliation commissions — look to Germany and the efforts that country makes to atone for WWII and the Holocaust, however imperfectly. There are ways to move forward and it requires courage, opens to the truth, acknowledgement and respect. Yelling ateveryone to “quit living in the past” is precisely the way to ensure the focus on past wrongs continues with each new generation.

Rene'T September 5, 2016 at 11:41 pm

Joe, I totally agree with you! Native American Indians and African-Americans were treated horrifically! I’m African-American and I’ve heard a lot about these atrocities. Our people have a lot in common!

Walter Harris August 10, 2016 at 1:06 pm

I agree. The Truth should be fully told. ALL these documented stories are “American History”. Bring it forward, let’s examine it. Print these things in our school text books. You Can’t heal what you can’t see. The message to all: This happened, we will not let it happen again. We as a nation are healing.

Dennis September 4, 2016 at 9:56 pm

Read “A People’s History of the United States” by Howard Zinn a brilliant historian

Rene'T September 5, 2016 at 11:30 pm

Walter, you can’t know where you’re going until you know where you’ve been. Simple as that! If atrocities had been committed on your family, friends, neighbors, etc., would you be able to go on, just like that.. “to quite living in the past”, especially when no one admits doing the crime, but they don’t try and hide it either? Or would it give you a little peace that the perpetrators acknowledge their part in it, just to start with? If you’ve ever heard of the Holocaust, and the how The Jewish people were finally able to feel somewhat of a sense of retribution, justice, or recompense, when German war criminals were captured and one by one brought to justice. It didn’t take away all of their pain, but it was a start for them to begin the healing process and to move forward with their lives. If you don’t agree with this or can’t see what I’m talking about , then there’s nothing else that can be said to convince you.

Anthony Russ August 15, 2016 at 3:35 am

The story was called “Slaughter of 364th Regiment.

Lack of this info, is why so many whites minimize the effects of slavery and intimidation of blacks who tried to pull themselves up by hard work. Whites have always done this. When my grandpa share cropped in Natchez la., they were never allowed to get ahead., no matter how hard they worked. White property owners always manipulated the numbers. My mom and grandpa told me this

Rene'T September 5, 2016 at 10:48 pm

Not many white people would have expressed a desire to know about ALL of American History….the good, the bad AND the ugly! That’s the first step to healing! Thank you, Sean!

Durie Burns September 5, 2016 at 11:22 pm

I think you hit the nail on the head. I taught a diversity class at my son’s predominantly white high school because of the racial incident ts he faced. I taught it to each incoming freshmen class for 4 years. What I learned is that in order to reach our children, it should start at the kindergarden level. That is the only way we can teach our children not to hate because we have to somehow over come the damage their parents and relatives will have already done to them by then.

Jules May 15, 2016 at 6:14 pm

Yes and whites all people should know. I was not aware of this, maybe if more people knew of just how horrible the white people treated/treat blacks .maybe they should look a little closer in that mirror at what is happening within their souls today.

Josh May 16, 2016 at 1:43 pm

There is way more black on black violence nowadays. Maybe all these thugs need to take a look in the mirror. This almost 100 years ago. There’s probably that man thugs killed in Detroit in a single year, where’s all the outrage over that. Why doesn’t everyone want to learn more about REAL problems that can be solved.

Craig May 16, 2016 at 1:48 pm

Two separate things. Your racism is obvious…

Jo June 14, 2016 at 8:12 am

How racist is it to state the obvious facts like between 1877 to 1950 a total of 3959 black men, women & children were the victims of lynching in America at the hands of whites. In the past 35 years, over 320,000 black men have been killed by other black men. What is the greater crime? *The source of these statistics is the Dept of

Beth June 17, 2016 at 6:53 am

Craig, true on Josh’s remark. My family and I live near Detroit and my husband worked as a teacher inner city for over 10 years. Culture is that of any city. One can be of any race in a large city and have situation due to the nature of large city conditions. But to say it is black male? Hmmm. Visit other small towns and consider each place has its problems, too. If you visit a farming community when in a drought, hay prices go through the roof and just to rake their neighbor over the coals at auction a farmer will get bid up over $12 dollars a bale. Is this robbery and theft? Hidden crimes in the country, hidden many things and violence one does not see. It does not make the news or sensationalized. Internet crimes and white collar in other areas, but not in the news like we hear about our large cities. Why? Because it is easier to continue oppressive words against a race to use as another way to keep a group in place. Many fine young people come out of that city and others to lead wonderful lives. Many serve our country in the military, as well, many have sacrificed their lives so the rest can live they way they like. I know. I just retired last year serving 30 years in the Army. Guess what??? I served with many who started their life out in Detroit. Two years ago I had the honor to give the first salute to a young lieutenant when commissioned in the army. He was one of my husband’s students and considers us his family. We are white.

Rich June 18, 2016 at 6:46 pm

Have you checked the statistics on white on white crime, it far exceeds black on black crime. I love how people try to prove a point without looking at the whole picture. If you’re going to use Facts to support your argument atleast look at all the information and not just what you want to see. Fishing much!

Rich June 18, 2016 at 6:53 pm

John Burkhalter May 17, 2016 at 9:48 pm

1st thing is that you don’t know anything about Black America, you may not know that it exist. As far as black on black crime is concerned, there is a big reason for it. When a black man kills another black man there is no police investigation because when the police get there they will say that it is gang related or drug related, which means that no investigation will be conducted and no one will be arrested. The revenge will be settled by a family member. It’s like the Hatfields and the McCoys, no difference. The police don’t get involved because they know that this is how it’s done in Black America and it will never change. In black on black crime nobody goes to jail because you don’t get time for killing a black man. This problem was solved many years ago when the black streets were patrolled by the Black Panther Police Patrols, black on black crime was at 0. They were shut down because they were monitoring the racist behavior of the white police and were challenging police brutality in the black community, Before 1972 when the Panthers patrolled the streets not 1 person was murdered by the white police.

‘I got a masters degree in Biblical Texual Critcism and Exijeditcs about 40 years ago, I speak Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek’, yet you still have not shown the relevance of anything you have stated here regarding the murder of these 237?

Jo June 14, 2016 at 7:58 am

How can the police effectively investigate a murder when NO ONE will inform and testify against the perpitrators? The DONT SNITCH mentality is the reason the murder rate is so high…… if one can get away with a crime, more crime occurs.

Nathaniel Hicks September 3, 2016 at 6:40 pm

You’re right they are two separate things. It is totally dispicable that there is SO MUCH, black on black crime, but “WHY”, is there a racist comment, always placed on a format such as this. I KNEW, there was one coming ! Place your bigoted comments on a Neo-Nazi format.

Dennis September 4, 2016 at 10:01 pm

You are absolutely correct sir. Absolutely

Anna September 5, 2016 at 11:38 pm

White on white crime SHOULD exceed black on black…considering the number of white vs black citizens in the US. Why dont people try focusing on the present instead of the past and see how much farther in life you would get. How long can people possibly milk history and still expect people not to hear blah blah blah… The majority of white folk are not interested in oppressing, lynching, beating, or mistreating anyone. What we are sick of is the black mans pity party, that makes you appear as the weaker race for not having the intelligence to understand that you are angry about crimes committed hundreds of years ago, that didnt have a damn thing to do with you. The more people whine the less we hear. Maybe some day you will CHOOSE to come out of the past and live for the future but until then one thing is guaranteed…more and more whites will keep hearing blah blah blah and never take you seriously. How can we bridge gaps with people whos reality is stuck in 1919? Life is such a better place when you choose not to be miserable cows.

Ronnie October 9, 2017 at 10:41 pm

Your so right there’s not one black man or woman in prison for killing another black person. You might want to send out an S.O.S. for that last brain cell.

Mika May 25, 2016 at 11:09 pm

I’m sure you’ve heard of institutionalized racism. That is a “REAL problem”. Education, poverty, broken city schools, racist judges/cops, difficulty with home loans etc. etc… It’s a racist agenda by the masses and Black on black crime is a product of it. It’s very important that we all have an understanding of the past as it will help us understand the present and address the future.

Shane Austin June 13, 2016 at 9:27 am

Gerald Leahy, so you have a Masters of Divinity degree but you still cannot discern or exegete the historical and social context of this article. Shame on you. Your comment reveals the oxymoronic nature of your claim: you certainly do not appear to have mastered “divinity” and the correct spelling is ‘exegetical’ or Exegetics NOT Exijeditcs, although the subject is really Exegesis. Just to help you out, the relevance of the srticle is that there is a history of violent acts and behavior in this country and until we confront that history with appropriate actions, that history will constantly find a way to repeat itself. Now, if you can use your knowledge of the original Biblical languages and textual criticism to exegete my comments you might discover that you are part of the problem!

Lord Robinson June 13, 2016 at 10:41 am

To. Gerard Leahy
This is not about you and your Degrees. The facts are that many Black Americans give their lives for a caused they believed in. And many Americans today are stilll reaping the rewards from the efforts of these Brave women and men. It’s not about you. Without them you wouldn’t have a degree.

Gary Rubino June 28, 2016 at 3:58 pm

Shane Austin, I have been reading these posts and I am astounded by some of what I have been reading. No I am not trying to take a position on either side right now. I was born and raised in Detroit. I decided to move to another state because of the crime that was directed towards me and mine. No, I do not know the color of all the criminals. I do know some were white and some were black. I am a first generation on my fathers side and second on my mothers side. No one in my ancestry was in this country when the horrific crimes were created towards the black population. Just throwing that detail out there and wondering why I am painted with the same brush as those in the past history of this country. Any way my real question is from your statement “until we confront that history with appropriate actions”, what are you proposing is the appropriate action?

Alton August 8, 2016 at 6:33 am

Police don’t snitch on police either , how hypocritical ,the Blue Wall Of Silence

HJ August 30, 2016 at 11:25 am

Yes. EVERYTHING that’s happening now is related to the past. TRUTH and daily action for justice and equality can result in a better America for ALL.

Tiny September 2, 2016 at 1:04 pm

And they dicing the football player for not standing for the National Anthem. BOO

Nicht nötig May 28, 2016 at 9:23 am

“Real problems that can be solved”? Does this indicate that racism is not a real problem or that it is an issue that cannot be solved and we should move on from it? Possibly both?

In any case, we should know the truth about how heinous those people were and how those same practices have adapted to our society today. People like you will sooner attempt to mask this ongoing issue by focusing on this black on black crime. It’s such a tired argument and the focus should be on what led us all to this state.

But, as trends show, people like you will not admit that the issue stems from a system put in place many years ago. And this will require people to take responsibility and action. You people just won’t.

Mike LaBroi May 28, 2016 at 10:30 am

Because the history of systemic violence on Blacks might have something to do with the hatred we have for each other. We should never forget what happened to us as a people. All of our historical leaders that tried to unite us and move our cause forward have been killed. We are not going to get over it. The way America has treated Obama is evidence that racism is still alive today. Although it has been hidden in code and Republican rhetoric we know it for what it is. Keep pushing Black people and you will get just what you wanted. We are tired of understanding, and waiting on justice and equality. At some point we are going to have to demand it or take it “by any means necessary”.

michael swanson June 1, 2016 at 1:00 pm

Their is always one IGNORANT ass-clown who wants NOT to deal with his own racist ignorance, so he tries to shift the blame onto the oppressed, so that he cannot and will not deal with his ancestors own fucked-up racist past. Sad.

Robert Lee Johnson June 2, 2016 at 12:38 pm

The majority of so-called black on black crime ( unfortunately there’s way more white on white crime but we never hear about that) tends to be a result of the underground economy. The illegitimate capitalists in the Black community does not have access to courts or police protection because their enterprise by definition is illegal. Their remedy for disputes that would normally be adjudicated in a court of law are remedied in the streets. Unfortunately with the availability of military type weapons and the perpetrators lack of familiarity with those weapons collateral damage ( the killing of innocent babies and other community victims) is more likely than these criminals hitting their targets. In the 1980s Black communities were flooded with cheap cocaine as a result of president Ronald Reagan’s foreign-policy. At a time when manufacturing jobs are being outsourced to other countries devastating many communities. Our communities are still suffering the results of Reagan’s foreign-policy misadventures in South America. Many of our communities are just starting to recuperate from the massive damage. The narco gangs that exist in many poor Black communities did not appear by accident. Contrast that with the response of the white suburban opioid epidemic…

Chrissy June 9, 2016 at 2:22 am

Okay so white people don’t go around shooting people you act like black people are the only ones going around killing people white people go around shooting up movie theaters, schools churches ETC so shut the f****** up not mention the land they stole that’s why they killed all of those people because they KNEW they were going to be more POWERFUL if they had all that land and money white people are lazy as f***

Real Talk June 13, 2016 at 2:16 pm

Weren’t most of the World Wars White on White crime?

Mason June 9, 2016 at 9:10 pm

The real thugs are you terrorists that shoot up schools, movie theaters, churches, abortion clinics, and college campuses. And not to mention molest children. Look at how many mass murders you devils commit a year. The number is around 50 so far for this year. And the best part that I enjoy the most out of it. Is when you bastards kill yourselves…. I’m all smiles Lol….

JenChicago June 10, 2016 at 10:27 am

There is the possibility to care about both. One thing happening doesn’t cancel out caring about the other

Judith August 3, 2016 at 1:24 am

I’m always flabbergasted by the sort of idiot “arguments” that insist that it’s wrong to remember and condemn lynchings because… Sometimes other bad things happen! And, not everything that happens is bad! So, lynchings weren’t wrong, or even if they were, you’re wrong to point it out! it’s like saying “how dare you remember the Holocaust and call it wrong, when it isn’t the only wrong thing that ever happened in history AND there are other things that happened that weren’t wrong? their so-called arguments make no logical sense whatsoever– they are only irrational bloviating and deflection meant to change the subject and prevent white feelings from being upset by the facts of what other white people have done.

LB June 13, 2016 at 12:10 pm

You sound stupid! Statistics show there’s more white on white crime than black on black. And even if it where the case, what would that have to do with this…

Dan June 14, 2016 at 10:35 am

And fool what about the white on white crime in America. There has never been a mass killing of whites bh blacks. Whenever people what to shift the conversation of racism they always refer to black on black but 82% of crime on a white person is commited by a white person. Also s o what if it was 100 years ago my grandparents lived there people are still affectwd today by these past horrors. In a matter of days communities lost everything land homes men. The people left didn’t have support. Homeless and afraid and you dont believe it had any impaxt on the future. Smdh

Gods child June 14, 2016 at 2:16 pm

Sir there is just as much white on white crime if not more. They just don’t call it that… Look up he staristics

A. Swift June 15, 2016 at 1:17 pm

First of all the overwhelming major of all crimes are WITHIN any race (white on white, Asian in Asian, etc.) than there is ACROSS races. That’s because of segregation. But no one speaks about “white on white crime” which means that the term “black on black” crime exists to excuse and protect stereotyped notions that blacks are somehow more violent. THAT is why it is a racist term.

LT June 15, 2016 at 9:19 pm

Hey Josh your hood is showing

Marvin September 1, 2016 at 2:04 pm

Nah…he was born that way………ultra white with a pointy head.

Frank June 19, 2016 at 8:17 am

Different context and you know it. Street crime is not racially motivated, it so happens that the gangs killing each other are black. White on black crime was sanctioned by the government to control a population.

robin lacue June 21, 2016 at 11:30 am

All races of people go through violence an crime when jobs an resources are cut short; yes white people to. so get of the black on black crime, crime is crime an if your race is push in a corner to survive you would self-destruct to. so get of that, because black people was never giving a leg up what we have today black people fought an died for it, an still dying; just to keep what little America will allow black people to have, research your history before you make a one sided statement.

Greg Hayes July 30, 2016 at 8:59 pm

When People like you can do shit like this and go unpunished, and when called on it all you have to say is about Black on Black crime today makes me think that it all runs together.White people kill a lot more white people than Black people kill but people like you will skip over all that if a Black person kills a White person or maybe an undocumented immigrant kills a white person you want to ship an entire race out of America!! Said all that just to let you know how stupid you sound when you say old crimes don’t matter, the only thing that we should be worried about is Black on Black crime. If you feel that way the only crime YOU should be worried about is White on White crime and not worry about when a Black man or an immigrant, legal or not kills a white person!! If White people can do this ,maybe your dumb a$$ argument would make sense!!

Swole August 2, 2016 at 4:00 pm

There’s no such thing as “black on black crimes” in fact, whites commit crimes against other rights at almost the same rate! Stop the foolishness and stay on point! Last lesson is people commit crime in proximity to where they live work and socialize , white or black!

Mark August 2, 2016 at 9:59 pm

I am an average white guy and if I am to be murdered by another person the most likely (by far) is by another white person. Asian-American people are far more likely to be murdered by Asian Americans if they are going to be murdered. Hispanic Americans are far more likely to be murdered by other Hispanic Americans. It cuts across all races. So, saying black on black violence is a problem is not the real story, because it isolates black violence as something unique by itself. It also perpetuates this myth of the “scary black people”.

Michael August 7, 2016 at 9:10 pm

Aren’t we just saying here that you are more likely to be murdered by someone we know? Just as wives are more likely killed by their husbands. The lynching we racial motivated crimes of political oppression and cannot be compared with the general social violence of average murders.

Lisa Beck August 4, 2016 at 7:28 am

Josh is the reason we should be taught this in school, before we learn deflection and denial. This alongside the true history of murder and oppression of native Americans taught factually might be the only chance we have to become the actual democracy that was intended.

Micah August 4, 2016 at 1:59 pm

Are you kidding me? So just sweep our history under the rug and continue on like nothing ever happened to us huh? Did it ever occur to you that maybe just maybe what we went through yesterday still affect us today?

mikki January 12, 2018 at 4:52 pm

True facts! History was hidden on purpose.

debbie August 8, 2016 at 12:13 pm

Josh, you are an idiot! Its a known fact the black people, kill black people and white people, kill white people. 90% of black people are killed by black people and 84% of white people are killed by white people. Now take a seat and shut the hell up unless you have something intelligent to add. You sound like uneducated poor white trash.

Cheryl Wiliams September 4, 2016 at 2:59 pm

dont change the subject on too a other matter because there white on white crime they speak on the pass

Curt September 5, 2016 at 10:27 am

Blacks have been stripped of all wealth , the generational wealth whites take for granted and passed from family to family. As late as WWII, blacks returning from war were not eligible for mortgages under the GI bill. Eventually blacks are herded into the poor inner cities. Poverty and daily survival lead to violence my friend. Why don’t you go live there and see for yourself.

M.Mann September 5, 2016 at 11:42 am

It’s sad that it’s always turned back on the victims and then rationalized by present circumstances. WWI and WWII is white on white crimes between kingdom -cousins, who pulled the rest of the world into their conflict. The Holocaust was white on white crime!! The mob was white on white crimes. The Protestants against the Catholics especially, in England. Must I go on?? This hypocrisy needs to stop! You smooth over atrocities!! The state of your conscience is suspect.

Elfreda Lewis-Walder May 30, 2016 at 9:26 pm

The white people who do these types of things don’t have a conscience they can look in the mirror all day and night and don’t ever see anything but what they want to see.

The town is very close to Helena. Some folks wanted to called it a “Riot”. It was an all out massacre. Not just hangings. Many folks were shot and killed. Rumor is there may be mass graves in the levees close to the river. The E is long in the pronunciation. Eee laine. Yes it is a hidden embarrassment for the State of Arkansas. Militia’s came from afar and basically wiped out the whole town. Yes it was a sharecropper’s meeting in a church and a deputy came to the church. No one knows who fired the first shot, but the deputy was shot. Then the word spread like wildfires. There have been a couple of books written about it. YouTube has an extensive story by the Rockefeller foundation… No one TRUELY knows how many died. Numbers range from 27 to over 600. I believe it is closer to the latter.

Earl Young February 12, 2017 at 2:36 pm

I am white and a Helena native and my mother and grandmother were from Elaine. That is a complete wrong statement by you that Elaine was “basically wiped out.” Elaine was a town of whites and it wasn’t wiped out. The Arkansas National Guard was sent to Elaine by train by the governor to restore order .

mikki January 12, 2018 at 4:59 pm

Embarrassment? They be dead! I would not travel to Arkansas if you paid me. And that’s in 2018!

Mack May 16, 2016 at 9:11 pm

They should post about how rival tribes in Africa would capture other tribes and sell them to slave traders

John Burkhalter May 17, 2016 at 1:30 am

A black tribe in Africa called the Lemba tribe of the Jewish priestly class, The Cohanim. A Hebrew-Bantu speaking people that observed kosher like dietary laws, and were thought to be more Middle Eastern than African. There were millions of them and the Africans would catch them and sell them to the Europeans slave market as slaves because of their different culture, the African never sold other native Africans to the slave market, only the Hebrew Black Jews.

Mack May 17, 2016 at 3:19 am

You’re joking right? “A black TRIBE in AFRICA called the Lemba Tribe” “Africans would catch them and sell them to the Europeans slave market as slaves because of their different culture”. My point exactly, are you being ironic??

John Burkhalter May 17, 2016 at 5:54 pm

You are not taking into consideration that skin color doesn’t matter. The Lemba was run out of Israel into Africa by the Romans. They came into Israel led by Moses from Egypt. It is difficult to see the black presence in the bible because you won’t see the term black or African because in Africa everybody was black as far as skin color, but many different shades of black, but you will read the terms Ethiopians, Cushites, Egyptians, Hebrews or other tribal terms. The Middle East including the Holy Land was connected to Africa until 1859 when the Suez Canal was completed. Studying the black presence in the bible can open the door to discussions about racial justice and dispel the myth that the bible is the “white mans Book” when it was the Black Jews History book who called themselves (The Lemba) after being run out of Israel. You might want to know what difference does it make? When it comes to the alleged absence of blacks in the bible, we encounter a web of cruel deceit that makes a mockery of the true biblical record. The Lemba were from Israel from the tribes of Judah along with the tribe of Benjamin and Levi, They were not sold because of their skin color but because of their culture. The Jews of today are the Ashkenazi Jews from Germany and Poland, placed there in 1947 by the United Nations, They are not the Jews of the bible and not from any of Abraham’s descendants. In the New Testament, Jesus only preaches to the black Hebrew audience. The mission of the Apostles was to preach to all the Gentile Nations as a post-resurrection idea. The Jesus movement swelled to about 3000 converted black Hebrews who were distinctly Jewish, following mosaic law, temple tradtions and dietary customs. Later came the gentile converts of the mixed converted Jewish-Greek church in Antioch, as well as many pagan converts of Paul in Syria, Asia Minor and Greece, with them the Black Jewish monopoly in the new movement came to and end. The Ancient Hebrews were black people. Consequently Jesus and his Disciples were also black Hebrews, as were the early prophets and saints. The following icons are mainly from orthodox christian church, which unlike the Catholic and Protestant Church’s seems to have resisted the urge to make everyone white. The Catholic conversion is so complete, that of the six known black Popes. Apparently no sacrifice is sufficient to dissuade whites from their natural habit to gobble up anything of value, then to claim that it was they who created it.

DARLENE SCOTT June 15, 2016 at 3:07 pm

No, but true. They didn’t sale there own natives, they sold the true Israelites. These slave ships was from Europe, known as Europeans that came to America and that’s how they build this country by owning slaves. Europeans are white Americans. They came over, Indians was already here. Go back to Columbus who didn’t discover America. Another lie.

John Ham May 17, 2016 at 6:15 pm

John I am very interested in your knowledge base. Are you a student of biblical history or educator?

John Burkhalter May 17, 2016 at 8:34 pm

I got a masters degree in Biblical Texual Critcism and Exijeditcs about 40 years ago, I speak Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek so we never studied in English bibles just the “Text Us Receptus” and the “Septuagint”. For example: In the Hebrew the word Adam or Ahdahm is defined as dark skinned like a shadow. Aphar; The soil from which Adham was made from, meaning: dust, clay, always very black or very dark brown in color. The birthplace of humanity was confirmed when the oldest human remains were found in Ethiopia in 1974. Many of the black Hebrew patriarchs married and had children with women from African tribes. I am also a black Hebrew from the Lost Tribe of Israel. According to Jeremiah 17:4 The lost tribe of Israel would be discontinued from their heritage, language, culture, possessions ect. which would leave room for question, how would the Lost Tribe know who they are; and how do we know that they exist. Cursed by the sins of their fathers Matt.27:24-26, scattered among all nations, The Black Hebrews were the only people scattered among nations through the Atlantic slave trade. The scriptures say that we will remain scattered until the fullness of the Gentiles comes. This shows us that these curses written in the scriptures would identify who the children of Israel are, because there would be no other way
to identify them.

Mack May 17, 2016 at 8:57 pm

Wow that was quite insightful John. I for one have never believed that Jesus was white being that he came from the middle east or which is now known as Lebanon I guess ? However I must question your claim of humanity beginning in Ethiopia It has been taught that man first started in Mesopotamia or modern-day Iraq

Cynthia May 18, 2016 at 9:42 am

John you are the man! Your history of the bible is on point, and is very insightful! But, you know many will question your logic because it goes against the grains of what has been taught in this country. They will never except this truth! Thank you for being open and informative.

D. David July 27, 2016 at 1:45 pm

Denis, ALL humans destroyed their enemies. They either kill them, enslave them, or rape them and allow them to assimilate into the culture. You ask why did African answer enslave and sell Africans? Ask that question of all peoples. Then ask why did America drop the bomb on Japan? We can search history and find humans being humans everywhere. Don’t allow white folks to make you think that Africans selling slaves is an excuse for the why African slaves were treated in the Americas. Read the Bible, you’ll read of the poor treatment of slaves. But, you’ll never read of anything like what happened to slaves in the Americas. Like I said, don’t let elite white people flip their shame on Africans. To enslave your enemy is normal human behavior… not pleasant but normal. Slavery in America is sinful, a sin in which only true repentance can erase. Obviously these people have yet to repent.

Denis June 10, 2016 at 10:39 am

Did they sell us so that we could be murdered, raped, beat, abused, and all of the above, answer me this Einstein. ..what subhuman individual buys annother human being! ?!they were treated worst than animals. …only the most terrible, no good, insane person would ever consider buying annother human being, to own.pls go back to sleep

Or talk about the millions of slaves tossed at sea , being transported from Africa after being stolen not sold .. Africa’s didn’t slave Africa’s in these harsh conditions , they were held captives released not sold repeatedly raped beat & lynched smh America need to be ashamed of its history to say we don’t deserve reparations

Jeanie May 17, 2016 at 6:58 pm

I love this site because I have been trying to find out WHY our text books sugar coat our horrific history!! I am 63. In Jr. High I had to ask a librarian questions my teachers couldn’t or wouldn’t answer. What Europeans did to Indians— Black people, Japanese … I read Frederick Douglass accounts of slavery. It’s as if Whites were all sociopaths !!
These mass lynchings are beyond comprehension!! This site reminds everyone — that we all need to keep speaking & speaking the truth.
I come from people I love & yet I learned racist comments from them. Decades later I number many races as close friends. Thank God. They showed me more love & understanding than many in my family!! Even if reparations are paid & they should be but nothing can erase the horror of what people suffered & because of those who might have been related to me.

Tonni February 7, 2017 at 2:35 am

For example, the 2015 McGraw-Hill textbooks that listed “slaves” as “workers” brought to work on “agricultural plantations”.

Rashid Irshad June 15, 2016 at 4:27 am

not just for black people, this is relevant for people and not just in the united states, the amazing aspect of this piece is that, this still continues to this day.

never do you people ask the fake russian jews in israel to ever let go of its fake 6 million holocaust, and gets restitution until this day for what it zion instigated in the first place according to benjamin freedman a euro fake converted jew; so why should we indigenous black people let it go? ours lasted the longest, in fact the constitution and 1638 exclusion act, black codes, proves that it’s still ongoing as we speak,so how can we stop talking about it when we the indigenous blacks live it daily! how selfish of you!

The story was called “Slaughter of 364th Regiment.

As a white man I am disgusted with actions of other whites back then. I had nothing to do with it nor anyone I know. It’s time to put things behind us and move forward. It was a terrible thing and should’ve never happened but continuing the hate and holding it against whites of today does no good for any of us. I treat every man the way I want to be treated, skin color does not enter the picture.

tima February 10, 2018 at 6:42 pm

Of course the comments descend into “my oppression was worse than your oppression” in about 4 seconds. Surely the point of the article is that we should band together and support each other in our struggles. Is doesn’t help anyone to start a “no YOUR people’s atrocities are worse” conversation.

Dennis Duncan September 3, 2016 at 7:00 pm

I was born in Elaine in 1963 and I can remember some people in the late 60s were still afraid of the white farm owner and the local sheriff. I’ve heard the stories of the murders from my great grandmother and she said whites walked through the black neighborhood looking for young blackson to lynch

Dorothy Adams September 4, 2016 at 5:52 pm

We need to stop blaming people today for what happened years ago.leave it there and move on…….we are all in need of unity……everyone today is mixed …….part black part white part Italian, moslem, jew, mexican………live for today and love one another and all hate will be left behind………reflection is good only when it’s a good reflection

Tonni February 7, 2017 at 3:38 am

Emmett Till’s brutal murder by a gang came back to light recently. Which reminds me of the Long Island parent, who had to defend his son from 2 car loads of teens, who were told that the son wanted to rape one of their female friends. This was in 2008. This will keep happening until you recognize it as means to keep people divided.

Clarice September 19, 2016 at 6:27 pm

Actually I would argue that these are not just things that blacks should know. As a white person it is important for me to know these things as well. None of us can be part of the solution if we do t know the history – even if it does boggle our minds and break our hearts.

na56 May 17, 2017 at 3:43 pm

Pushpender Singh is on Facebook.

Mary V. Hatfield August 28, 2017 at 11:13 am

We as whites should know these things also. God help us all.

yes, help jus’us all poor black people, we’re the ones under attack all day one way or another constitutionally, and doctrine of exclusion act since 1638 proven, and not 1 white person yet has tried to help abolish this hate/greed and hybrid european crimes done by all insane european/eurasian germanic groups that has done this to us, or paid any restitution for our losses; like the ‘Devils Punch Bowl’ it was worse and right after we helped you people win a war…all ongoing as we speak to the original black and brown people, even after we taught, and shared…what is wrong with you people, don’t you have no soul? oh that’s right..hell a kind spirit then?

Eliyahu October 5, 2017 at 8:09 pm

We whites need to know about this stuff as well. I’m pretty well-read when it comes to history, and I’d never heard about this.

James Burks May 15, 2016 at 9:53 pm

Might I suggest that you look up the “Gullah Wars”. That history is not found in any history book and after reading you might question whether the executive order issued by President Lincoln was actually to free the slaves or stop the Gullah Wars. Understand it lasted 136 years.

Jim Wiggin May 14, 2016 at 8:05 am

I’d never heard of it. Short blurbs about the number of lynchings over the Jim Crow years usually just give a total but no details.

Don D Smith May 14, 2016 at 9:42 am

The CSA we democrats

SJ Jolly June 19, 2016 at 8:23 pm

Yes the CSA was Democrats. Also know as Dixiecrats. Which, under the influence of LB Johnson and Richard Nixon, shifted over to the Republican Party, as Southern Republicans. Different label, same old racist beliefs.

Josh May 16, 2016 at 1:49 pm

Just so you know it was Democrats who wanted to keep slavery. Republicans are the ones who put an end to slavery. So I guess you should thank all the right wingers and condemn the liberals and Democrats. Also sometimes it pays to educate yourself before talking about stuff you don’t know. It can help prevent you from looking stupid.

Anita Potter May 16, 2016 at 3:48 pm

Josh, The comment you’re replying to is speaking about the Right Wingers if the 21st Century. I’m sure he knows what time period he’s in, do you. Furthermore, the article is about Lynchings, 237 of them, not which political party was forays against slavery. So knowing this can prevent you from looking stupid.

Maria May 16, 2016 at 7:48 pm

It was economics & the need for soldiers, not compassion & humanitarianism that led to slaves being freed.
We must know where we came from to know where we’re going. Yes the real ugly truth about American history must be told, to everyone.

Anthony May 17, 2016 at 5:24 pm

Knucklehead research further. Those people totally different from you f ING idiots of recent time. Don’t even try to compare yours and your ilk with those of the past. Freaking facist.

John Burkhalter May 17, 2016 at 11:27 pm

Following the epic civil rights struggles of the 1960s, the racist south began a major demographic shift from Democratic to Republican dominance. This shift was motivated by racism. While it is certainly true that many white southern racist abandoned the Democratic Party over it’s new support for racial equality and integration, and the most white racist Democrats became Republicans. In this historical jujitsu maneuver apparently transfers all of the past sins of Democrats onto the Republican Party, (Slavery, The KKK, Jim Crow Laws ect.

Estella Cohen June 9, 2016 at 10:24 am

That was a different time. Today’s Republicans are no better than yesterday’s Democrats…they both wanted to suppress the Black vote and civil rights. So, then what is the Republicans excuse for the often racist actions today?

Phillip Nichols June 9, 2016 at 9:15 pm

Josh, just so you would know the Republican party and the Democrats switch their polarities after L.B. Johnson signed the civil rights act. Republicans became the right winged, narrow-minded scum that they are today willing to put an obvious nut-case like Trump in the presidency. TRUTH BE TOLD Republicans and Democrats are two sides of the same coin, neither can be trusted and both are corrupt!

BRENDA June 16, 2016 at 6:13 am

Josh, you definitely need to educate yourself before sharing your comments. The Republicans contexually during Lincoln’s time, would be the Democratic party today! The Democrats of the 1800’s were the same as today’s Republicans; racist and uncompromising.

Dave August 3, 2016 at 5:23 pm

No conservative wanted slavery then or wants slavery now. The Democrats shifted from slavery to population enslavement. Why do you think they continually try to encroach on our 1st and 2nd amendment rights while making schools lower to the least common denominator instead of inspiring towards excellence? An uneducated, uninformed and unarmed public is easier to enslave than an armed, educated and we’ll informed public. The biggest problem isn’t just the Democrats, but now it is also the establishment Rebulicans that are following suit.

Enjoy your freedom while it lasts, your enslavement will begin soon.

Lynn May 14, 2016 at 10:38 am

White americans, former Europeans are so darn mean and violently brutal. Every time I read one of these stories it makes since that they say to us “just forget the past.” But make no mistake about it. The past is also the best predictor of future behavior. So if given the chance they will do it again. SMH

Research the Red Summer of 1919 or Tulsa, Okla. In 1921 for a start!

Mike Reardon May 14, 2016 at 9:15 pm

History needs to be remembered in it’s entirety. I was taught that this country was supposed to represent and protect every one! A story of lies! I’ve learned that really meant (means) white wealthy males and their families. The arc of justice has moved slowly, to slowly for blacks, Native Americans, women….This story of the 237 human beings being lynched for organizing to keep the fruit of their labor needs to be remembered….

Mack May 15, 2016 at 4:48 am

Right… That’s why those racist whites (whom make up 80% of the country) voted for a black president, twice. Gimme a break. Sounds like you’re the racist bud.

Great read. There is another untold story called the race riot of 1883, Howard and Hempsted county Arkansas. It started over a land dispute and a sexuall assault of a black female. Blacks orginized to seek justice and found themselves being shot at and arrested for killing one white man who was the suspect to the assault on a black mans daughter. Over 75 black men were arrested four hung two acquitted, one excepted from prison. We must continue to tell the stories.

We must do more than praise this article for good information and history. We must take the knowledge of the fortitude and courageousness of the our murdered brothers and sisters and apply it to our lives. We must become farmers and gardeners and take back our land. Land is wealth and prosperity. Start small. Plant a garden. Feed yourselves healthy foods. Sell or barter the surplus. The same can be applied to clothing and shelter. Learn how to make it. Feed, clothe and shelter yourselves first. Sell or barter the surplus. This is how the Black community will prosper.

Not all of American treated Obama bad. As a matter of fact, most Americans voted him in twice. So lets not lump everyone in the same statement? Love and Peace to ALL. I am a mix of many races, spanish, black, french, and I am tan in color. I am a human being first. I am both black and white. Have black and white family that I love equally. I have seen plenty of racism, both ways. I pray it stops some day. One Love

cheri May 14, 2016 at 3:01 pm

I know about the sins of our Fore Fathers and Mothers. There is nothing I can do to fix it. I also know about the sins done unto the Native Indians which we need to keep working on. All the atrocities of men and women in the past can not be repaired but our generation is living together and we are doing our best by everyone we can. What I see is that we need to mend the divisions caused by those who did atrocities to men and women and especially to children. What I see now is that we need to fight for the unborn and the children of now. Many are being unjustly put to death or used as tools of profit in some way or another ie, prostitution, sex objects, body parts or punching bags from frustration. They do not have a voice or any tools of justice. This is where we should work on our humanity and admit this injustice. Children need us to stand up for them and give them rights. Children should have the right to safety, support, protection and love. Some one once said that we should put the past in the past and work in the future so that the past doesn’t jeopardize the future. Men, women, children of all nations, color and belief have suffered in someway by the hands of some un-justification just as what is going on in the present time. It must stop and where we can mend our divisions, it will help make us strong as we stand together and work on it. Just something I feel is what we need to do. I am not perfect and I have made mistakes but I am not so shallow that I cannot learn. What do you think? I think that what was done to many is horrible but I am hoping that will never happen again.

Casaundra Saunders May 14, 2016 at 3:21 pm

Not true about us not being able to do anything about it.
Being an educated advocate for human rights gives us as whites in this country the ability to stand up and say that these atrocities are unacceptable, that treating people of color disrespectfully is unacceptable.
Racists need to be called out and confronted so that they know their behaviour and attitude is dated and criminal.
If we as whites do it, it has a different impact.
And it is making a difference…we must believe so that we can make a positive change for the future of all of our children.

Rhonda Copeland May 15, 2016 at 2:12 pm

We know that all whites do not hate blacks, but there is still institutional racism in this country. We can’t ignore that. We must fight it on every front. Let our white brothers and sisters stand with us.

Marianne Lachapelle May 14, 2016 at 5:41 pm

It’s absolutely horrifying, it’s absolutely horrifying that racism still exists today. As a nation we need to stand up and fight together no matter if you’re black or white. People need to vote for whomever is running for the Democratic party. Please please vote.

Mack May 15, 2016 at 10:51 pm

You are obviously not very intelligent and have been caught hook, line, and sinker. The democrat party is the modern day plantation class. Why don’t you realize that all they do is pander to you by promising more incentives for your votes. There is essentially no family element within the black community and much can be traced to the democrats, such as; planned parenthood, generational welfare, extreme city taxes causing “white flight”, glorification of drug/gang culture, and on and on. I’ll never understand the blind allegiance blacks have to the dem party.

rusty May 16, 2016 at 5:52 pm

Would you be so kind as to tell me what the democrats have done for black folks? Are you telling me that you democrats are doing black folks a favor by keeping them in the ghetto? Are the democrats doing anything about mostly black schools? Or right, the democrat teachers in Chicago are showing their concern for the children by not showing up to work? And of course, along with demands for higher wagers.

SJ Jolly June 19, 2016 at 8:29 pm

It is said that it take 5 generations to change a population’s beliefs. (Roughly 110 years). As the Civil Rights Movement of the ’60’s was 50 years ago, we are only half-way to ending racism.

Torben Selch May 14, 2016 at 6:08 pm

Same behavior seems to be repeated by US soldiers abroad. Vietnam, Syria, Iraq, Libya, Yemen .. and you name it.

Carlos Young II May 14, 2016 at 8:10 pm

Now, when you ask for the whereabouts of these white idiots who committed these atrocities, they’re all gone! No more. Why would you kill innocent souls demanding for what belongs to them? Why couldn’t they use “white supremacy” to stay immortal? As if this has stopped; look at black people terrorised & killed relentlessly the racist police, the black people rotting in US jails with no justice, black people on death row on tramped up charges, mass shootings against blacks… This is absolutely deplorable!

leslie May 14, 2016 at 11:25 pm

racism is very much alive and palpable, still. i don’t think we’ve come so far that many deny its existence. just see how obama brought out the very worst of people. he also brought out the best…for those who truly want unity and harmony…but those who have despised him from day 1, cannot help but hide THEIR true colors. it is seriously repulsive, and i am sickened. that said, i do not envy their karma. i agree…these stories need to be told, again and again and again. blessings.

Jerry May 15, 2016 at 12:08 am

I am white. I am sickened and ashamed of the racial history of white people. I am old so I have had a lot of time to learn and unlearn things. In looking back, I realize that I have benefited from privilege. That makes me feel guilty. I have learned that for a white person to say they are non-racist is a lie. Being non-racist supports the status quo because it is a passive stance. Being anti-racist is the only way a white person can be in support of dismantling the system. I care and I do try. For any whites reading this, I say do your work, learn, listen, and don’t stop working for change, ever. For anyone that is not white reading this, please accept what work I can do to help.

Rhonda Copeland May 15, 2016 at 2:17 pm

Thank you, for your insight which is so on point. We can work together. But we must build the trust needed to accomplish our goals.

Mack May 15, 2016 at 4:55 am

We must never forget our history. But truth be told; more than likely there aren’t many if any Americans related to or at least five generations removed from any slave/owner. Also another forgotten tidbit of history is how brutally Irish slaves were treated; sometimes considered far worse then blacks

Gerard Leahy May 19, 2016 at 12:24 pm

There were more Irish slave owners than there were Irish slaves during these times. The fictional plantation Tara (seat of the High Kings of Ireland), in Gone WIth The Wind, was based on large slave owning Irish plantations in the South. There were Irish slaves brought to the Caribbean in large numbers. But numbers that pale into insignificance in comparison to African slaves in the Caribbean and in N America.

Mack May 15, 2016 at 1:32 pm

Was that article satirical? All he made were claims based on Internet forums and opinions.

michael phelan May 18, 2016 at 2:49 pm

Do we have to read this American rubbish. The Irish were mistreated by the Irish in the Famine. It is all about greed and a refusal to try and understand other people or dismiss them. We are all human.

Gerard Leahy May 19, 2016 at 12:31 pm

There were instances of Irish mistreating Irish during the famine. But no more than would have happened if there were no famine. During the period of the famine, where over a million people starved to death, there was a large surplus of food exports out of Ireland which were controlled by the British. Many of the food conveys and trains were guarded by the British by arms. Ireland at the time was the breadbasket of the Britain and to a certain extent to other parts of the Empire. The famine is on record as being discussed many times in the British parliament at Westminster. Almost no coordinated relief was granted, and more than one MP is on record as essentially saying that the famine was population control of the huge Irish population at that time.

I saw an interview with Ice Cube where he is explaining why he supports Trump! He cites a comment Hillary made over 20 years ago calling black gang members super preditors. That comment has been totally taken out of context. This is so much more then just who will be President. It is about control and power going to the Right. The power and the will of the White Wealthy Right supports not spending money on education, spending money on strong and powerful polices forces to keep this Country Segregated. The Bernie Sanders movement about fairness and equality needs to merge with Hillary and every minority group in the Country should do all they can to keep Trump from becoming President. Take it from a rich white guy who feels guilty on how easy it was to succeed in the country simply because of the color of my skin. Race relations in the Country is reprehensible.

Lynching was community sanctioned. Lynchings were frequently publicized well in advance, and people dressed up and traveled long distances for the occasion. The January 26, 1921, issue of the Memphis Press contained the headline: “May Lynch 3 to 6 Negroes This Evening.” Clergymen and business leaders often participated in lynchings. Few of the people who committed lynchings were ever punished. What makes the lynchings all the more chilling is the carnival atmosphere and aura of self-righteousness that surrounded the grizzly events.

Railroads sometimes ran special excursion trains to allow spectators to watch lynchings. Lynch mobs could swell to 15,000 people. Tickets were sold to lynchings. The mood of the white mobs was exuberant–men cheering, women preening, and children frolicking around the corpse.

Photographers recorded the scenes and sold photographic postcards of lynchings, until the Postmaster General prohibited such mail in 1908. People sent the cards with inscriptions like: “You missed a good time” or “This is the barbeque we had last night.”

Lynching received its name from Judge Charles Lynch, a Virginia farmer who punished outlaws and Tories with “rough” justice during the American Revolution. Before the 1880s, most lynchings took place in the West. But during that decade the South’s share of lynchings rose from 20 percent to nearly 90 percent. A total of 744 blacks were lynched during the 1890s. The last officially recorded lynching in the United States occurred in 1968.

Extremely sad story. It’s terrible what happened to all those innocent people who were murdered. Sad for the innocent white man who was murdered beforehand protesting. Where his murderers ever caught? And did any of those murderers involved in the mass slayings ever get brought to trial?

RJ May 15, 2016 at 11:21 pm

Yes, this tragedy of loss of precious life is beyond racial division. We’re in spiritual warfare; and unfortunately, it’s going to get worst! Especially when the Holy Spirit is taken up out of this earth: Which in essence is the only thing that is suppressing the ultimate destruction that is yet to come. May the Lord Jesus Kingdom come!!!

Thank you very much for this history. Why not include a caption telling your readers what the photograph you included in the article depicts?

I’m surprised this massacre doesn’t have a name.

David B. May 16, 2016 at 8:32 am

It certainly does, though the authors of this piece did not make it clear. See the following article, which gives more detail:

I’ve always been puzzled by racism… I’ve read that it’s fear based, it’s about money, about ignorance… I really can’t say that it’s any one thing… Except, shameful.

I don’t wish to seem like I’m throwing my hands in the air and giving up, but it seems there’s just so much water under the bridge. If there’s a glimmer of hope, it’s the children. Every new generation seems to be growing incrementally away from racism. Some children continue to be raised with values that subjugate others, but hopefully, less every new cycle.

I figure that changing people’s minds about this subject will always be harder than starting them off the right way…

I was going to mention my heritage in this note, but why?

Call me, human.

Author, William Faulkner, from Mississippi, embraced many white/black relationships in his writings, and produced some of the most eloquent prose in southern literature. We southern whites are not all racists, and Faulkner’s love of his black caretaker in preference to his own mother can be found in his beautiful, often long sentence and paragraph structure. His topics and characters are real and varied, holding charm, grace, eccentricity, beauty, and horror in the strokes of his pen. He shows that we are all on the same path, regardless of who we are.

Maurice Atika Nyamoti May 16, 2016 at 11:53 am

trust me! at the end, black people will have the last laugh. No matter how slow that will be, everyone will one day have a chance

Mr X-Ray May 16, 2016 at 12:19 pm

It seems likes it’s in most white people DNA to be this evil..

Rob May 16, 2016 at 4:02 pm

There was a name for this massacre. It was called “The Red Summer of 1919”. It occurred in more than 3 dozen American cities and one rural area, which I believe is this one in Arkansas. This was the welcome back from fighting for this country during a world war. This is also why so many blacks returned to Europe looking for a better life. The US is not the be-all and end-all of countries. I was treated well there during my visit. The only people who looked at me strange or who asked me dumb questions were from the southern US.

Deborah Gray May 16, 2016 at 9:03 pm

I wonder if there is a way to get the names of the sharecroppers. I have been on Ancestry working on my family tree and it seems my great grandfather just fell off the face of the earth. He lived in Arkansas but I find no record of his death nor did I find him on any of the census reports.

mk58 May 16, 2016 at 10:27 pm

…I’ve read a lot of the post here and i must say it is atrocious as to what I’ve learned from them.people if we don’t get a grip on ”RACISM” here in the U.S. then we as a society might as well go back to the stoneage. For those that do not understand the meaning of the word racism let me educate you, racism in a sense simply means(division, separatism and elitism). One divides and conquer which now leads to becoming separate and leading to becoming elite so now i have power over you or dominion if you will. Now those that are left powerless feel the need to rebel…race reveals it’s ugly head again. This is the exact same ocurrence that happened in Tulsa,OK. just (2) years after.Dig that…

I am thankful today for my friend who shared this on Facebook. He is a black man ~50 years old. I learn from him all the time. I am a white man who is 47 and I “not-surprisingly” never heard about this. It is shocking to me that this took place so recently in our history. We have come a long way, but still have further to go. This is an important read. The graphic photo is one of the saddest images I have ever seen.
I approach these comments from a human standpoint. I do not judge, I do not preach. What I do is feel the pain for the senseless loss of life. This is a tragedy that, like the holocaust, should be taught, so that we too can say: “Never again.” “Those who do not learn from the mistakes of the past are doomed to repeat them.”

Truther May 17, 2016 at 8:44 pm

The exact number of murdered cannot be verified. It could be less than 100. If it was less than 100, that’s right around how many blacks get killed by other blacks in Chicago in 2016. Actually pick a year, mass black kills happen yearly. No outrage by other blacks. Because black people are racist.

Jamison C. Braman May 18, 2016 at 5:20 am

You sound stupid. Whites kill whites at the same rate as blacks kill blacks. And one thing has nothing to do with the other. When morons like you make statements like this it just displays your ignorance. Its like saying who cares about all the people who die from AIDS every year? Cancer kills more. And what do you mean no outrage from black about murders in Chicago or anywhere in the country? There are huge amounts of grassroots organizations and community members in every black city in america fighting against black on black crime. I never see any groups fighting against white on white crime though. Thats interesting considering whites kill whites just as much as black kill blacks AND in the last 20 years black on black murders has DECREASED by 60%, not the same for white on white murders. Go educate yourself before you repeat half truths “Truther”

Gerard Leahy May 18, 2016 at 8:42 am

What is the relevance of your point to the mass murder of 237 men in 1919?

Gerard Leahy May 18, 2016 at 8:39 am

The sad truth of this appalling story is that these men went home to their wives and children. Went to church on Sunday. Prayed to God, and lived out the rest of their lives without having to face the full force of justice for the mass murder of 237 men. Evidently, from top to bottom, every member of the local community are responsible for this injustice. For their actions, and subsequent lack of action in not helping to bring these men to justice. And for utterly failing these men, and their families who survived this tragedy.

I’m curious as why people who aren’t Black feel the need to come to when this site isn’t intended for them. Remember the Alamo, remember 9/11, remember the holocaust, remember the attack on Pearl Harbor, but bring up stuff like this and some people get mad. Why?

Gerard Leahy May 23, 2016 at 1:13 pm

You don’t have to be black to have an interest in black history. Knowledge is the key to prevent history repeating itself.

Is Black Main Street a site for African American’s only? I doubt that that is the intention of the site owners.

I am Irish and an avid lover of history. Especially the unbiased and intelligent type that this site provides.

Randy H. May 23, 2016 at 1:31 pm

I have no problem with you bro. I was basically reacting to certain people who seem to have an issue with stuff like this being brought up. I should’ve stated that in my initial post. It’s like if they’re alright with bringing up and remembering the atrocities that happened to their people and others, but the atrocities that happened to Black people needs to be left in the past? I just don’t get that. If they hate this stuff so much, than why do they come to a site aimed at Black issues, Black news and Black History? Do they just do it for laughs and trolling purposes?

Gerard Leahy May 23, 2016 at 1:52 pm

I totally agree, Randy.

Best to dismiss them with logic. And if their comments don’t contain any ounce of logic, then best to ignore.

why isn’t some of this energy being directed toward ending the slave trade today? The greatest homage you could pay the memories of past attrocities would be by saving their descendants who are slaves in many countries around the world. sitting here in one of the countries that has ended the practice of slavery and ignoring the many countries that still employ the practice. save the present before addressing the past. it will still be there.

Terrible incident but some of the facts are disputed — most notably, the number killed, with numbers ranging in different sources from 25 blacks and 2 whites to 865 blacks. Motives and actual course of events are subject to dispute, even after careful research by reputable historians. Based on any of the accounts, the picture with the article here is a very questionable fit. The US of A as a nation is still responsible for one of the largest genocides ever. The Native Americans were driven from their land, and murdered by the 10’s of thousands, with an estimated tally of 1.5 million victims.

The US of A is a sham. It must accept that past presidents and other leaders were racists and murderers. And must pay for this.

It will not happen of course, as the nation would be absolutely stone broke immediately. And in the US only money counts.

Earlie Clendion June 10, 2016 at 11:36 pm

I was born in Helena Arkansas in Phillips county, I left in 1969. I can count on one hand the fond memories I have of this place. It was hell on earth for the majority of Black people calling it home. Why am I not shocked that it happened here?

Lance butler June 13, 2016 at 10:07 am

There is only one race and that is the human race. There are different families of this race car nationalities. And any nation that was put in a financial bind in this country did what they had to do to eat. When the Colonists came here to make money they decided to enslave people. When the Italians came to Brooklyn in the early nineteen-hundreds they invented the drive-by and killed each other on a daily basis in the most malicious and gangster ways because they are truly gangsters. But we conveniently forget for ways to point the finger the Italians invented the drive-by and organized crime to the point that the government adopted their ways to make profit because they were so good at being Criminal masterminds. When humans are put in the position to either eat and make money or starve and die they will do whatever it takes to obtain money and survival it is a natural instinct. It doesn’t matter the color. But it is obviously the Moorish community is being preyed on who was here in the United States even before the Indians, this is called Morocco and the Constitution was written not on Christian laws but on Islam to do business in Morocco. If you don’t believe me look up the Tripoli Treaty of 1787 you will see that the so-called black man has the longest treaty in the United States history to this day. And Barack Obama signed it into law in 2010 although nobody showed it on television you can look it up on YouTube the rights of indigenous people. We are sovereign land owners we did not come on ships we were already here. If you put 2,000 people on a ship and they’re using the bathroom for 4 months they would drowned in their feces and urine. We were already here. Congress know it the Jesuits know it the industrialist knows it and all Scholars know it but it is not financially beneficial to tell the story. People do not read so they say they are Americans and the United States of America is a corporation not a country this is the most stupid thing I’ve ever heard and I know how great the ignorance is when people say I live in America, how can you live in a corporation. We have to make them uphold the Constitution and then you will receive your rights and you have to claim your nationality because black color and African-American does not have a flag the flag of the United States of America Incorporated is not a flag of nationality it is a flag of Commerce and amnesty. To do business in Morocco it is a banner not a flag of nationality. That’s why they call it the Star Spangled Banner. Our flag is the Moorish flag red with a green star in the middle you can see it at the White House all day but you won’t see it in our own communities because their knowledge is kept away from us please look up Moorish in America and you will find your true heritage It’s All Over YouTube and you can reference it from any books especially from Congress. If they would enslave your ancestors do you think they would actually give you the true knowledge of History. Any person in Morocco AKA United States of America Incorporated nose when they are standing next to someone of African descent are from Africa we look nothing alike. We distinctly no Africans when we see them and they are not us because we are from here born and raised some people came on slave ships but it was not our ancestors Bottom Line This is the Masonic trick. And I know being a 3rd degree Master Mason this is all Fiction. It’s just like they say George Washington is the first president of the United States of America Incorporated when he is definitely not look it up. False teachings of a corrupt group of individuals…. not all European people are bad so do not get it mistaken but the white supremacist has a lot of power. And will do anything out of hate. When the term black came out it was used to classify slaves and criminals and the so-called black American was actually considered a white citizen because they were abiding by law. So why do you call yourself black and only a noun can name a person place or thing. So you have to watch how they’re using the language to trick you black is not a noun it does not describe a person place or thing so they are calling you something that is literally not in the English language existence as being correct. More trickery pay attention read.

At least I believe the past is inextricably bound into the present. It can be very challenging to accept the wrongs done in the past and to understand them. The past is not something to be got over, rather it is a often a sometimes hidden and active ingredient of the present to be understood. I am a person confounded by the failure of some of my forebears to appreciate the culture of Australian Aborigines as well as their inherent human worth. Attitudes can be destructive and cruel. Let’s not go there.

marty fry June 13, 2016 at 11:41 pm

I just learned about this a week ago. I’m 68. Interesting how things like this are kept quiet. Also, I’ve lived in Oklahoma all my life and didn’t learn of the Tulsa race riots until about 15 years ago. THankfully they’re coming clean (the historical groups). This is a great web site. Thanks.

good day all, I am feeling sooo sad about how people treat people, I come from a country where you get a job based on the colour(color) of your skin. I am white. Afrikaner, Afrikaans speaking, christian, all things that the world hate, but I do not hate those who hate me, not because of what the Bible say, but because I am saved, not because I desirve it, but because He loves me. HE looks at your heart and loves you. HE has shown the love to me that does not discriminate, dus, I can not do other than not not do the same, HE is my light to see what is right and wrong, I love those who oppresses me and show them respect, because I do not come from this world, but from the Kingdom in Heaven where Jesus is King.

Sugarfang June 14, 2016 at 8:53 am

The statement in this headline is not accurate. If you read this article it gives accounts of what happened and yes it was a tragedy but not a lynching and there is no accurate count. The largest lynching was in fact of Italian men.,_1891_lynchings Lets only speak the truth, which there is plenty to speak.

Codest June 14, 2016 at 10:28 am

Agreed, this incident occurred in 1919. But have you thought to yourself that even then there would be a large number of white people who were vehemently opposed to this? At least you should be taught in history that the first set of men who took up arms against slavery were white men, and many of them were killed. And besides, what is the objective of the “Never Forget” caption? Does that mean a warning that such can still occur today? or a call for a revolt? or a call to retain racial bitterness?
I am not saying the problem of racism still don’t exist, and I believe America still has a long way to go in fighting it till its totally eradicated if possible. But you need to realize that fight against racism is not the same as fight against white people, such fight in itself is still racist. As much as we have white racist, so do we have black racist, likewise it is in other races. Were you taught in history that the whites are not the only ones to be blamed for slavery, did you hear that blacks also colluded with slave masters to commit atrocities against us?
This is how I believe racism can be fought. Get hold of how your generation will be defined. Get knowledge in whatever way you can. Form alliance with other likeminded people who share your views regardless of their races. Participate in how your communities are governed, to the county level, the State and to the Federal. Cry out “foul” and be heard about the ills committed out of racism today, not about the ages past. The past is gone and we can only learn from it. The present is what we need to act on, so that we and out children and children’s children can have a better future.
And don’t forget, there are white, yellow, red people who also detest racism and all the atrocities that stemmed from it, we need to join hands and fight it together……. if that is really what you would have in mind.

jay June 14, 2016 at 1:09 pm

The reason, codest, that we “never forget” is that many white americans refuse to acknowledge the horrific atrocities that were carried out for many many years but are nonexistent in textbooks . I thank God for this website and the people who have found facts and researched this buried/hidden information and publish it widely. Why you ask? So that we can teach our children how their ancestors fought/died for freedom. Why you ask? So that we are humbled when we try to complain about getting up to go to work or vote or go to school for higher education. We remember our ancestors who died so that we could do these things. Why you ask? So that we can remember that this one culture who has NEVER been enslaved by another culture can know that you will NEVER understand why we say never forget or why we still get angry when blatant racism STILL exists today in subtle forms: employment, promotions, housing, loans. Why you ask? Because black men are being shot before they are read their Miranda rights or given any fair justice at all TODAY. Why? Because evil is embedded in the souls of men who pass that same evil hatred down to their children. But we can recognize it and react, not ignorantly, not in violence but in exact opposite manner, with patience, peace and calm. There have never been multiple large black mobs which have donned sheets and went out and grabbed white people for hanging/beating/murder in response to the treatment received by them or their ancestors, not even today when we have every reason to do so…we don’t because we really don’t want to be…like you. It boggles my mind why white people hate black people so much when THEY enslaved, raped, murdered, lynched, beat, killed us. They hated our resilience, our strength, our song and our faith. How even when we were picking their cotton, we sang. That is why.

victoria mccurry June 14, 2016 at 6:20 pm

i was raised in oregon with no prejudice towards anyone. i was so shocked on a trip to florida to see how horrible black people were treated in the southern states… i really had a hard time believing what i saw… facilities for the bathroom were horrible and drinking spouts in the mud…. i’ll never forget how sad it made me feel to see an old black man holding up a tray of fried chicken in the hot sun, as a living ad for the restaurant down the road… i wanted to stop and take him home but he just waved us away… i have always done all i can to treat folks equally based on how they act, not the color of their skin or what country they were born in… as a blue eyed, white haired old lady, i will soon be the minority and can only pray i also am treated with respect because of my actions, not the color of my skin…

Pericles June 14, 2016 at 11:03 pm

Prejudice is still alive and well and anyone who thinks differently is at best naive, and more probably a racist themselves. I am white and grew up in Washington DC, in a school system that was 92% black, sure I experienced some violence and was robbed, etc, so what. If I grew up with all the crap black people have had to take, I am afraid of the person I might have become. I have been dating a black woman for three years, and I am aware of the subtle way racism is still applied, my eyes are fully open to this scourge of humankind.

Thank you for this site.

phalla Woowood June 15, 2016 at 10:11 am

I am not black, but I am myself experience racism when I worked at Huntsville, TX. White people is always considered themselves better and superior then the rest of other races. It is happened now event we have a black president. Black is always not treated equally the same as the white race. One of the example is the rape case, the black guy mostly go to jail longer then the white one. The white guy who rapped a woman at Stanford University, he only received 6 months jail. If he is black, surely will longer.

Weaver June 15, 2016 at 6:53 pm

The racist in America want you to forget this ever happened. I mean no disrespect to the 49 killed in Orlando, but how about what happened in the past ? To say the killings in Orlando is the worst is simply not true, African Americans were killed and massive numbers during slavery, does this not count?

Charles Teale, Sr. June 15, 2016 at 11:39 pm

The main reason n why I deplore books and movies that display black men as week during the aftermath of the First World War is because of occupancies like this. They stood up as bravely as anyone could in light of the fact that to do so meant that they would be castrated, lynched and burned for doing so.

Kathy June 16, 2016 at 3:50 pm

If I hear one more person bring up the fact that other people from Africa sold people I’ll scream. You might want to sell your child or neighbor to me for a slave doesn’t mean I’m going to buy them? Silly people. Doesn’t make it ok for people to buy another human being because your own cousin/sister/brother/mom/dad or neighbor wants to sell you. And quit bringing up other atrocities committed by mankind over the years. The point of this article is that we were never truly educated about our own history and our inhumanity to one another.

Roger Cartwright June 17, 2016 at 2:23 am

> “In an attempt to disrupt a union meeting, a white landowner was shot and killed. The sharecroppers braced for reprisals that were sure to come and formed self-defense forces.”

Violence begets violence.
The blacks KNEW that killing a white landowner would result in retaliation.

> “The local sheriff, Frank Kitchens, deputized a large white militia that was headquartered at the county courthouse. In the end, 237 Black people were killed…”

So far, that is correct, but the lies and deceit follow to negate any responsibility or accountability for spilling first blood.

> “because they wanted fair compensation for the crops they harvested.”

WRONG!!! Because they murdered a white man.

Today, thousands of white people are murdered by blacks because they are white.
As Louis Farrakhan said, “there is nothing wrong with robbing, raping and murdering white people.”
Your moral bankruptcy was known long ago.

Susan June 17, 2016 at 4:15 pm

It looks like this article was plagiarized.
Posted a year + ago.

But good info nonetheless.

Rose September 6, 2016 at 5:02 am

When anyone uses another person’s literary work they should always give them credit. Otherwise they are technically stealing, which is also called plagiarism.

Many darker skinned people, especially those of African descent seem to wrongly think that people of their race were the only one’s that were ever slaves. Reality is that the Romans enslaved far more Europeans, i.e. Whites than the darker skinned people of African descent that were ever enslaved in the USA. Reality is that every culture and nation throughout the ancient world practiced slavery. Reality is that slavery was still legal in some nations well into the 20th century and still might be legal in a few places in the world.

Reality is that human trafficking of people from all races is still a big money maker even though illegal in most nations in the world. People still try to do it. For one, I’ve seen articles about rich Middle Eastern people moving to the USA who were treating people like slaves. Pimps in every big city constantly seek to manipulate impressionable teenagers into sexual slavery, human trafficking by threatening these gullible people that they will kill their little sister or like threats if they do not prostitute for them. These human trafficking rings can be very vicious with people disappearing never to be seen or heard from again who were victims of these rings.

For a history of slavery and the KKK in the USA, I suggest watching the documentary, “Hillary’s America….”

Obama has done a “good” job of escalating the violence in the Democrat controlled ghetto’s, i.e. “plantations” in the USA and Hillary looks forward to continuing and escalating the “good” work I’m sure. Just upholding the Democrat Party traditions of oppressing people of color. Think of all the darker skinned people in Africa who sold their neighbors into slavery back in the old slave trader days where slaves were being sent to the USA and other places and that is what Obama is equivalent to.

Trump says that he wants to make it so that every child in the USA can feel safe walking to school and he wants to restore law and order but the Hillary’s of the nation want you to think otherwise.

Eric Nelson June 19, 2016 at 4:01 pm

Is it sad, the history of America, that is.

Pretty much has been, killing, literally from day 1 to the present. All in the name of One Great Melting Pot.
White folks, slaving and killing Blacks, even their own like the Irish. At the same time, slaying Natives by the millions in massacre after massacre, to get to where we are today.
Nowadays, the killing from America has been exported to other countries, other cultures, whether the masses felt like it was justified or not, which caused and still causing alot of hardship and resentment in those places. Short of God coming down and humbling us, is there a fix? Will all races of the human race ever get along? Maybe not in our lifetime but i like to think not all is bad. There are many, who truly care for each other, no matter what color or creed. Where we truly need to begin is recognizing the good of this world and build on it. Negativity will only bring more negativity and i hope we as a people start to see and believe that, before we destroy ourselves and Mother Earth.

I checked Rich’s link and how he said Whites and White on White crime is More violent. Please understand African Americans are only about 13 percent of the population. With this in mind the Ratios are mind boggling. I lived in a Community that was without a murder for 150 years. As small as it was , I felt very safe. These things are possable

Vivian Ginyard June 22, 2016 at 8:48 pm

Clay……regardless the percentage of blacks in this country……..whites are the most violent race of people…..The Forefathers knew exactly what they were doing when they taught a race of people to hate themselves……that leads them to hate what looks like them……On the slave boats…..white jewish owners had them so pack together like pigs going to be slaughtered… piss……shit….vomit……women menstruation…….very little air…..sunlight…….WHAT DO YOU THINK…..THEY WERE GOING TO BE….MENTALLY STABLED TO FUNCTION IN WHAT WAITED FOR THEM?? IT BEEN DOCUMENTED….THAT THEY THREW SO MANY SICK AND DEAD BODIES IN THE OCEAN….THAT THE SHARK FOLLOW EVERY SLAVE BOATS……..GENESIS 15:14 …..I WILL PUNISH THE NATION THEY SERVED AS SLAVES

fosgate3 August 3, 2016 at 8:09 am

So Vivian, are you saying that all whites are violent and hate blacks? That’s what it sounds like you are saying. For one thing, not all whites were slave owners or even had slaves. My family, for one, did not have any. My mother’s side were protestants who came from England to escape religious persecution during the 1600’s. They migrated from North Carolina to Missouri, to Mississippi and never owned a slave. My father’s side came from Sweden just two generations ago and never had slaves. I don’t believe in slavery, bigotry, or anything else that leads to the unfair treatment of ANY group, regardless of skin color. I teach my daughter the same and neither of us are violent people.

Not all whites are bad people so quit overgeneralizing. If people would stop focusing on what color a person’s skin is and isn’t and instead, focus more on how to treat others with dignity and respect, this world would be a much better place. Unfortunately, that’s not going to happen anytime soon. Movements that emphasize one race over another race (such as this “Black Lives Matter” thing) do nothing but deepen the racial divides in this country. To me, all lives matter. All lives are equally important.

Oh and one more thing: Before you decide to quote scripture, why don’t you take a moment to consider what you are quoting. You can’t take scripture out of context and use it for your personal need. If you read Genesis 15, you will find that God is talking to Abraham (or “Abram” as he was then called). Gen 15:14 is directed to Abraham descendants, or more specifically, the tribes of Israel. If you continue reading the Old Testament, you will find that God took care of Egypt and many other countries/kingdoms who enslaved the Israelite people. It wasn’t about slavery during the 1500s-1800s.

I don’t know why at a young age I was interested in my Granny’s life when she was growing up, but I asked her a lot of questions to picture her when she was my age. I listened to her stories for years before she passed and gained so much insight. She was 17 when the incident mentioned in this article took place. Her family was poor, not able to purchase their own land and became sharecroppers to survive. At 11, her mother passed away shortly after giving birth to her 8th child. Granny quit school in the 5th grade and was left to raise all the children. The children who were old enough worked in the fields with their unreliable father. Due to years of poor treatment, her father had multiple mental issues and did little to support the family. The land owners rarely kept their word on the divisions of the harvest and to go against them would’ve meant an unwinable conflict and possible death. Granny was scarred from the abuse she endured, but she was a woman of strong faith, quick wit, self education. She learned which plants and roots could be used for various meds, which plants grew wild and how to trap small animals to keep the family fed. Most importantly, she learned how to make business deals and save every possible penny. My grandmother was able to raise the other kids to become responsible, contributing adults, with most obtaining college degrees. I never thought it mattered, but my family is white. I only mention it now because many comments have been about being black and yet my family faced many of the same inequities. I don’t know if my Granny handled the situation well or made the best decisions. If I had time to tell her story in detail, you might consider many of the things she had to do as cowardly. But in the end, I’m proof that she survived that unjust time in history. I’m proud to be descended from such a strong woman.

Every one is not made to handle such horrific tragedy….AMERICA dismissed the fact of mentally and physically to heal a people that was and is broken…..they just went about their lives like …..OH WELL….GET OVER IT…..STILL TODAY THEY DONT ACKNOWLEDGE THE HORROR…BY ACKNOWLEDGING…THE HOLOCAUST…..911……ORLANDO KILLING AS THE WORST ON AMERICA SOIL…….REALLY??………BUT THAT IS NOT WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS…..GENESIS 15:14….I WILL PUNISH THE NATION THEY SERVED AS SLAVES

Rev. Davis June 22, 2016 at 9:20 pm

I think somehow the conversation went beyond the historical significance of what happened. What needs to be understood is that, and I’m paraphrasing here, “If we do not know our history we all may be doomed to repeat it.” The crux is that Black folk organized is one of the greatest threat to white privilege and power.

Alicia June 27, 2016 at 10:37 am

Thanks to the NRA blacks will never be unequally armed ever again! National Rifle Association we gotta love ya!

Hey folks – it’s a big mess and the only solution is to receive the forgiveness and healing provided by Jesus death on the cross for us. As we each do that, the Kingdom of God grows and our common enemy will be trampled under Jesus feet….and he loses the power to divide us.

Romans 3:22-24 And this righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no distinction,23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24and are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.…

Galatians 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

Will there ever be a day that we all stop with the black and white! and realize we are all people. People call other people animals but yet a dog for instance doesn’t care if you are black , white, yellow, or any other color. What happened in our past is over. We learn from it so it doesn’t happen again , not so we can start it all over again, people need to look at people for what they have done not by what color they are. I notice people who talk on here make it known they are white and are with the black, you don’t need to say you are white just be a person and work together. The Government is corrupt we all know this but not all of them I don’t think, there are bad people everywhere but it is not going to help by choosing a color. We are helping destroy this world and for what? where is it getting any of us. If we were all to come together and stop the government from destroying us instead of destroying ourselves, while the rich keep getting richer the government getting stronger. I like people, I like helping people, I hate the fighting.
What happened in past was wrong, but I did not do it, you did not do it so let’s learn from it. I lost someone I love and it hurts like hell but by hurting someone else it is not going to make things right, because somewhere along that line is a good person who to is getting hurt. The government is getting stronger and we are fighting against each other and we are all losing the battle.

If the world had no eyes, what would it be like then.

DaveR July 30, 2016 at 3:24 am

Reading all this with interest but beware of the revisionists on here trying to score points.
The following is anecdotal but I feel approaches the heart of the problem. My son had to meet a journalist in a restaurant in East Memphis. After being seated they sensed an atmosphere and then realised that they were the only whites in the place. The atmosphere disappeared when the (black) journalist appeared.
Later at a music industry reception they were surprised, and shocked, when they realised that there were no blacks in the room – unlike Los Angeles, New York or London. They had reached an apartheid culture.
Now I have experience of Ulster and I would suggest that this apartheid is the result of fear. “You know what those white/blacks are like”. “They always do that”. Etcetera.
If people had the courage to advance the hand of friendship, to socialise, to engage in adult debate then this apartheid might, just might, go away.

This is the kind of crap that continues the racial divide. Your inability to forgive, your desire to hold a grudge, and your inflated sense of self-importance holds back our cause for peace. Get over yourself. You aren’t representing our movement with words like these.

Daniel Rold September 7, 2016 at 3:52 am

I’m a White man and I understand what both of you are saying. Really Racism is for mental midgets. It’s sickening to me to read stories like this. I know the home of ALL humanity is Africa. My ancestors where black BEFORE they were white. Too much ignorance in our society. The Garden of Eden was in Africa and Adam and Eve were BLACK! Lighter skin tones developed simply for access to more vitamin D because of lower levels of sunlight in Northern latitudes. We are ALL BROTHERS AND SISTERS! Please DON’T EVER make the mistake of associating me with this horror. It grates against my SOUL! But we can NEVER forget the truth of the past. That is the ONLY way to prevent it in the future. I understand how a black man can be upset at the past and hate white people. But in reality we are all the same people. The heart in you is the heart in me. I love all of my human family. I UNDERSTAND why the hate is there. But PLEASE DON’T make the same MISTAKE as these sick and perverse white people and hate ALL white people. The only difference between us is a vitamin.

White Democrats historically have been all pro-Union until people of other races have sought to organize. I disagree with unions on a political and economic basis, but it is nevertheless undeniable that there does exist a constitutional right to organize. It should go without saying that there is no justification for something like this, but when it comes to the lives of black people vis-a-vis the authorities, that has never been as obvious as it should be—and the reaction of people to BLM shows that it still isn’t.

This is the same things that the govt. is doing to farmers of all colors today. Work all season to grow a crop and at the end you owe the mills, chemical companies, and the govt. more than the crop is worth. Govt. took the place of the mafia, white supremacist, and kings. We are all slaves today.

Nkosi August 13, 2016 at 12:01 pm

Of course, this atrocity was never mentioned in any of my k-12 text books nor where most all the other atrocities white Americans commited against Blacks and other nonwhites. That’s why so many white people, today, live in a fairy-tale existence–they are never taught and reminded of their ugly history on this continent, nor are they taught about the great achievements of our ancient African ancestors.

Daniel Rold September 7, 2016 at 4:01 am

I’m not ignorant of what you speak about. I’m white. I hate the atrocities of the past in all races against all people. The fact of the matter is we are all Africans. My ancestors migrated from Africa to Europe then to the US. There is only melanin between us. You are my brother! We are all the same. The heart in you is the heart in me. I would die protecting you. We must come together to overcome our past NOT break apart off superficial skin deep differences and repeat the mistakes of the past. I love you all and this makes me sick!

Jocelyn September 2, 2016 at 4:31 pm

Thank you for bringing this tragedy to everyone’s attention. Never forget atrocities because history has been repeated over and over again. My family escaped Europe for genocide against our village for the land in which we resided. I was born here and am forever grateful of the rights I have in America. I grew up in the projects during the 60’s and 70’s. As a child it was a confusing time for me. There was an influx of black Americans moving into the projects during that time. I’ve witnessed and been a victim of racism and still do. There are a lot of angry unkind people who thrive on tearing each other apart. The difference is I refuse to participate and speak up when I see others being victimized whether it be race or social status. As a country we have progressed through the decades and in my lifetime since the 1960’s. Yes, we cannot forget the past however it should not consume one’s life. We have a future for us and our families. We need to continue to fight racism and improve our country. What are we saying to our children when the most publicized Black Lives Matters protests are the violent ones that destroy neighborhoods, properties and businesses. Violence is not okay. No one will take a group seriously when the aftermath is destruction. The publicized racism of blacks denigrating whites and the police. Then blacks targeting whites and police officers to commit violence. This is not okay. All I see is this creating a bigger divide when we need to come together. How are we to progress as a people and make positive changes without lamenting over the past. Yes, never forget but don’t let it control your life and keep you down. Everyone has a choice. Mine is for a better future. People need to act whenever witnessing someone being victimized, intervene and let it be known it’s not okay. I don’t even watch the news anymore because it’s so manipulative and creates more of a divide. Change will not happen by continuing the divide. We need to come together and not be witnesses anymore. Get rid of those in Government and community leaders who have their own agendas. I’d like to see more people commenting with ways to progress rather then read racist comments and calling white people “crackers” and “devils” Ask yourself are you part of the problem?

Vohid September 4, 2016 at 1:17 am

This is a drop of water from the ocean that the white discriminated and humiliated the black. At first they hunted the black in Africa and then enslaved them. than the black were exprimented for medical purposes. when they wanted equal rights, they were killed or assicinated (1968). this process is still going on although the west always cries about democracy!

Rose September 6, 2016 at 5:09 am

Its racist to blame this on “whites” when reality it was racists who did this, not a race of people who did it. Referring to the people who lynched them as if the only thing about them was being white is racist. Using terms like, “it was not uncommon for whites to use racial violence to intimidate Blacks” puts the blame on the entire White race when in reality every race that exists has racists in it. Using terms like this just creates more division and more fear.

Reality is that many White people have put their lives and their fortunes in danger in an effort to end slavery for all.

Jack black September 7, 2016 at 7:16 pm

Matthew Rodgers September 20, 2016 at 12:41 am

The event happened but your particulars are all wrong. Need to do better research. It wasn’t a union, it was a group of sharecroppers looking to sue landowners over itemizing accounts. A landowner wasn’t killed; a man he hired to start trouble was.
Seriously, get yourself together. Start with “Arkansas: A Narrative History”. There are plenty of sources on the web as well.

Matthew Rodgers September 20, 2016 at 12:47 am

Oh, yeah… no one went to trial? Try the dozen black men that went to trial over the “Elaine Race Riot” and received death sentences. It took years and much work from good people to get the men released from jail. Do NOT tarnish their memory by forgetting them. Shame.

Vonhugo September 21, 2016 at 11:06 am

DEMOCRATS were runnin thangz…but no mention of that in the black main street article….WHY WAS THAT OMMITED?????Background

With Phillips County developed for cotton plantations in the antebellum era, its population was overwhelmingly black and descended from slaves: in Phillips County, blacks outnumbered whites by a ten-to-one ratio. In the Arkansas Delta around the time of the Great War, most black farmers were sharecroppers and illiterate, as were many poor whites. The Democratic-dominated legislature had disenfranchised most blacks and many poor whites before the turn of the century, excluding them from the political system via the more complicated Election Law of 1891 and a poll tax amendment passed in 1892. The legislature enacted Jim Crow laws that established racial segregation, institutionalizing Democratic efforts to impose white supremacy. The decades around the turn of the century were the period of the highest rate of lynchings in the South

Such an important article to egregiously leave a=out any detail of what actually happened!!! They put the white militia at the court house and say the black people readied themselves… and then they skip to the end where 237 are dead. No details? who struck where when? Why did the black defenses fail? What happened to the leader? Who survived?

My parents told me that in 1942, my dad was stationed in Biloxi, Mississippi and lived in a shack with my mom, there were sharecroppers picking cotton on a very hot day, Mom gave the cotton pickers water.’The next day the white supremacist burned their shack down. They lost whatever furniture they had and their dog in the fire. Things in the South have not changed much, even in today’s crazy society. It is so sad that people have so much hatred against one another.???????☹️

Tressa November 3, 2016 at 7:33 am

They way our people are is from the direct results of violence and death of our past just less ten 100 years ago. I don’t see how anyone can’t see this to be the truth. These farmers were killed because they asked for fare wages for hard work that was stolen from them. This is a fact. Blacks were killed for trying to work and live. Churches burned down while trying to worship and pray and schools cheated out of recourses while trying come up and to learn. Loans being denied trying to create a future. This has always been a deliberate attack to strategically keep our people down so we would not be able to compete. When that did not work they resulted in killings. Slavery was only 2 or 3 grandmothers ago but you want us all to forget? When we understand that our ancestors were not able to build or leave us legacy such has inheritance or a college fund due to white oppressors stealing and killing and blocking a entire nation of people that have built a entire economic country on death blood sweat and tears and yet and still denied it’s fruits of and from their labor.

Always remember that the boss-man and the powers-that-be do not want a strong working class. That means you and me. The only reason we generally work don’t work 12-hour days, 7 days a week (nor have to live at our workplace because what’s the point of bothering to live elsewhere?) and that your LITTLE GRANDCHILDREN aren’t pushed up chimney flues to clean them is because PEOPLE BEFORE US FOUGHT AND DIED to get better working conditions. Even if you’re not in a union, the status of your workplace has largely had to live up to what unions have accomplished elsewhere.

It WAS NOT due to the generosity of the business owner.
