Viacom Buys The Soul Train Franchise

soul train scene2Black Enterprise reported that Viacom’s BET has recently acquired the iconic Soul Train  franchise from InterMedia Partners and The Yucaipa Companies. The amount has not been disclosed, but what is an interesting point to note is that neither the buying or selling companies are black owned.

With The Soul Train franchise, comes 1,100 episodes of the well known dance and music show, an award show, and videos & photos dating back to the show’s beginnings in the 1970s.

“BET Networks is honored to have acquired a brand with such a rich history and unique content that is forever relevant to all segments of our audience….With a Broadway play and a concert tour as examples of opportunities in the works, we look forward to finding engaging and smart ways to grow the brand, while preserving its heritage and legacy in music, dance, and fashion,” said Richard Gay (executive vice president/strategy and operations at BET Networks) in the LA Times.
