Wyclef Jean Under Investigation For Stealing $16 Million From Haitian Charity

Wyclef Jean has been accused of stealing money from the Haitian charity he founded. In 2010, a criminal investigation was launched into Wyclef Jean’s Haitian aid organization, Yele Haiti. Although taking in approximately $16 million in donations in 2010 alone, Yele Haiti was under investigation after just two years because of fraud allegations. It’s alleged that the charity spent some $9 million of the $16 million collected on office space, employees’ salaries and various other expenses. A report has surfaced that Wyclef paid himself $100,000 to perform a concert on behalf of Yele Haiti. The charity is now defunct after 8 years, amid allegations of fraud and mounting debt.

Devastation After Earthquake

Although denying the accusations, Wyclef Jean is being hounded by charges that his charity is a ‘cesspool of fraud and broken promises.’ Wyclef at one point even pronounced the charity to be Haiti’s ‘greatest asset and ally.’ The charity was founded in 2004 by a group which included Haitian-born Wyclef Jean. Yele Haiti was a small organization in the beginning with assets of only $37,000 but after a devastating earthquake hit the island nation in 2010, donations started pouring in. Wyclef himself was able to raise $1 million with the first 24-hours of the earthquake by issuing a plea on Twitter to help his homeland.

Some of the ways the charity squandered the donations were to spend $30,763 to fly Lindsay Lohan from New Jersey to a charity event in Chicago, which only raised $66,000. And then another $58,000 was spent on private jets to fly Matt Damon and other celebrity friends of Wyclef to Haiti.
