George Zimmerman has reportedly sold the gun he used to murder Trayvon Martin, for $250,000. Zimmerman had previously accepted an offer of $150,000 but reneged on that deal. The auction site that hosted the gun sale, UnitedGunGroup.com, has confirmed that the gun was sold on May 21st. The gun in question, a Kel-Tec PF-9 9mm, could be purchased new for around $350.
The gun was originally set to be sold to Florida bar owner, Denny Honeycutt, for $150,000 but Zimmerman reneged on that deal. Honeycutt told the Dayton Beach News-Journal: “I thought he was a man of his word.” Denny Honeycutt told the newspaper, that the new buyer is a woman who purchased the gun as a birthday gift for her son. Zimmerman refuses to disclose the identity of the buyer and said that it’s the buyer’s decision to stay anonymous or not.
Zimmerman used the gun to shot Trayvon Martin, an unarmed Black teenager, in 2012. He was charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter but was acquitted at trial. Zimmerman’s lawyer said that he had fired the gun in self-defense, even though the police dispatcher told him to leave the teenager alone and that a uniformed police officer was on the way.
The gun was originally listed for sale on GunBroker.com and had received much criticism. That auction had received a number of hoax bidders with names like “Racist McShootface,” who ran the bidding up to $65 million. Benjamin Crump, the lawyer for the Martin family, called the sale “offensive, outrageous and insulting.”
The killing is seen as the beginning of the Black Lives Matter movement and now Zimmerman is saying that he will donate proceeds from the gun sale to law enforcement charities because BLM is inciting violence against police officers. Zimmerman has gone so far as to describe the gun as a “piece of American history” and an “American Firearm Icon.”
